Default Considering Buying a Z need advice

Hi everyone I am new to the forum and I am getting a new car soon (really soon) and am considering getting a Z. What I would like to know is 1, is it a good idea to FI these cars? 2, how much whp can the stock engine take? 3, Is there anything in particular that I should look for when buying a used Z, ie know issues etc? And finally if you where to buy another car what would you get?

A little about me is that I am just selling my 02 roush focus which I fully built to make 310whp (hence the need for another car/project) and have a evo x mr in my garage too (which is stock......for now). So any help in choosing a new used car would be great and any info on the Z that you think I should know would really be appreciated.

thanks Aiden

Welcome to the forums. Might I suggest you try using the search function, a lot of your questions have been asked and discussed in length. And if I were to buy another car I it would be a 370z, or a 2007 Subaru WRX STI.

Since I have a 08 evo (which is better than an sti) I want to get something different. Thanks for the advice with the search button but the info on known issues of used Z's I could not find. Also if it is asked so much we should make a sticky .

The reason it's asked so much is because nobody ever searches around here anymore

they each have something thats better than the other, i personally would take an STi over an evo...

Z's are good for FI, but i highly recommend new internals, clutch/fw etc. the tranny can handle a good amount too, but i'd get that done as well. depending on which Z your looking at, id go for an 07' if its a project car, more power possiblities with HR. The 370z is nice, but still new to the market, unless your a rich guy and just feel like burning money, than i would do the 370z.

if i had a choice in getting a new car right now... i'd get an 05-06 M3 or an 08 M3. thats me though .

I have owned both and I personally didn't like the STI at all but it is all down to the person I guess. I tired the M3 out and they are great but this is going to be more of a toy than anything else. I was thinking of getting an 04 roadster touring and getting a built block and a TT kit. Just want to know if most people have reliability issues. I want a car that is going to be 500whp or a little less, that is not going to break down every 15 min. How many times a year does the typical 350 have to go into the shop for repairs (no oil changes etc)?

Ya I had a S/C car and it was fun but they are way too efficient for me. The parasitic loss is too high for me to really be able to use, and the limits that you run into from a s/c are also not appealing for me. I like to be able to upgrade on a bi-monthly basis.

Get a c5 zo6 and you will have fun that will not break down . Also great chick magnet for about the same price.

A C5 zo6 is almost 8-10K more where I am from or I would consider it. Even the 350z is way more than what I would pay if I where to buy one out of the US. Too bad I am like a 20+ hr drive to CA where lots of great cars are.

1: F/I works well, as long as you don't go over about 10psi on anything older than an '07, and have good tuning. I'd get an '07+ for f/i, as they can handle more boost stock with the HR motor, but if your goal is to build the motor, then it doesn't matter.

2: 400whp seems to be about the limit for the DE motor, and the HR can push close to 500, as long as everything is tuned well.

3: If you're buying an 03/04, look for tire feathering and transmission gears crunching. 05 track-06, look for the motor consuming oil. 07-08 seem to be pretty reliable so far.

4: G35's and G37's are great, I also have a soft spot for VW R32s.

Thank you very much. I plan on getting the engine built anyways as I might buy one with high KM (120K km) with a nice interior and body and build it up to what I want. In the end I would like a car that is sub 12s 1/4 mile. I will also check out the g35, I looked at them but not too seriously.
