What's the deal with honking?
Sometimes I pass someone driving the other way on the road, and they blare on their horn. It has happened before when there really is no one else around them, and nobody driving next to me. I have only noticed this phenomenon after I got my Z, so now I'm wondering if honking is considered some sort of sign of "nice car" or "I like your car"
?
Anybody know what's going on with these people's horns?

You got me. However, in the midwest where I live, a honk means "SCREW YOU A$$HOLE". I think this is ridiculous. A honk can mean "look at the light", "watch out", "heads up". Around here though, it is always interpreted as an insult. I usually get the finger when I honk at someone. I am sorry, but if you are at a light that is green and I can see you still fishing around in your back seat, you are going to get a short honk-honk "its green buddy". I hate it when people don't pay attention and take every "heads up" as a insult.
A lot of times it happens during the day when my lights are off. And it does sound like a short beep - beep. I really don't think its an offensive remark. It seemed more like a compliment than anything else... maybe its just me.

No honks here... just morons with p.o.s. cars that choose to gun the sh|t out of their cars when turning at an intersection when they spot me and proceed with the "my car is FAST TOO!" look.
Meanwhile i'm just sitting there shaking my head thinking "idiot."

it's a compliment i think. when i'm in my highlander and I see a Z I honk sometimes. short one, not a mean long one.
unless it's night and you're driving w/your lights off i guess. the Z's my first car that lights up automatically on the inside so i left my lights off the first time i drove at night.

i'm guessing that it was meant as a compliment.
the only time i use my horn is during the annual safety check. i dont even know what the horn sounds like in my z yet. even if you honk at someone as a compliment, if they take it the wrong way, there can be trouble.
there are too many road rage cases here. not as bad as the mainland, but we do have them. a few years back here in hawaii, a gang was riding around with their headlights off at night and when someone would try to signal to them that it was off the gang members in the car would shoot at them.
whenever i drive i try to be courteous and not **** anybody off. dont know who has a gun. especially the guys in those riced out civics.
