Default Layaway

On my motorcycle my policy has a layaway period. For 3 months in the Winter the car is on layaway. That means I don't drive it and the rate is lower, but it is still covered for fire, theft, vandalism, etc.

It doesn't save a lot, but since I don't drive it in the Winter I do the layaway anyway.

My buddy stores his car in a garage that he rents for the winter so he wanted to keep insurance on the car in case the building gets damaged. He also takes that car off of the road and he didn't want to pay full price for insurance. He called his insurance comapny and they said that if he gave them a picture of the car on jack stands wit hthe wheels off he could keep the insurance a low price.

CHECK with your bank first if you have a lien on your car. Some banks or credit unions will NOT let you drop any form of insurance.

I went to Italy for 6 months and stored my wife's 02 Maxima. We still owed 13K, and I wanted to drop the insurance and only keep fire/theft insurance. The Credit Union said no way, its our car, and if you drop the insurance we will put our own insurance on and add that to your payments. I was steamed!

Needless to say, I sent them a check for $13K and paid the car off. I ended up dropping the insurance for 6 months and saved about $800 along with interest the bank woulda made on me. Their loss, my gain.

So, check with your bank first.

Yep if you have a lien on the car your gonna pay up the nose even though you are not driving it. If it's clear you would pay about 15-20 a month for insurance. I pay 11 an month on my rx-7.

On my Z I pay less than $500 every 6 months

There's an available storage insurance in my company. However, the Illinois law say that you need liability coverage as long as the car is registered. That means, even though you are not going to drive the car, it needs to be insured for liability to other people. If you don't have a loan, you can remove the Collisioibn part of the policy and leave the Comprehensive part. Make sure you keep the car in garage all the time. Comprehensive will cover you from fire, theft and vandalism. It will not cover you from hit and runs, etc. If your company is giving you a hard time, send me a PM.
