Would a Z be more fun to drive with a turbo 4?
Hey, I'd just like to start off by saying that although I am 23 and have been driving for 7 years, I have only once ridden in a boosted car (none of my friends have boost). That was an old friend's WRX about 4 years ago and I remember it being AMAZINGLY fun even though it's slower than my car now. When I bought my Z new in '07, I didn't even bother test driving a single other car because I knew I wanted a Z haha.
To those of you who're like me and bought the Z over an STI and EVO cause the Z is way sexier, do you love the NA V6 power or do you think the Z would be more fun with a turbo 4 like the STI and EVO engines? I don't mean in modability or power output, cause they are equally fast stock, but in the way the power is delivered and the sound and pull of a boosted engine.
Thx for any input and sorry if this topic has been discussed before.

You mean Nissan 370Z goes to a turcbo 4 cylinder and makes the same horsepower?
Technically possible but doubt Nissan will do it. Naturally aspirated VQ motor is bullit proof and cross platform - used in other vehicles. Why mess with a good thing. If Nissan is going to test reliability of a turbo 4 hope they do not do it in a Z.

4 cyl. I think it wouldn't be Z anymore. Kind of what BMW is going to do with the new M's. I love V6 power over turbo 4cyl though. The added displacement contributes to the benefits. To me a lot of people opt out of the Z and into Evo's and STI's even C5's because of simple bolt on potential.
i think it may be worth it. someone else chime in if i'm wrong, but i dont think 4 cylinder engines, boosted or not, push very hard at all once you pass the 110 mph marker. high speeds are important to me and i want an engine that can give me some go when i need to make a quick jump from 80 to 100 which is what bigger engines tend to give from my experience. of course the lighter weight and bolt ons make the 4 cylinder appealing too though

A factory turbo like in the 300ZX would be nice. ability to add power to turbo engines is much more cost effective than NA. And if desired, you can go E85 conversion and tune and get over 400whp.
What exactly about turbo builds are cost effective? The 400hp on a turbo build is a lot different than 400hp on an NA. Sure, you can get higher numbers, but who really needs 800hp?
Greddy TT kit - $5k
Rebuilt engine - $8k
Labor and incidentals - $5k
You're talking about dropping in a four cylinder with boost? Why? The only worthy contender I can think of would be a SR20DET. The 4G63 is not even Nissan, although it is fabulous. If you really wanted to, you could pick up a VG, but why put that type of weight into an already heavy ride?
Ultimately it all depends on your budget! What do you want to spend? I've always been told bolt on turbo kits are reliable up to about 400 HP on the internally stock VQ. I know there are threads on here that provide more details on that. Unless you are willing to spend a great deal for FI done RIGHT, you probably won't be happy with the results.

I always hated the fact that audi changed the b5 s4 from a v6tt to a straight 8. Back in the day I enjoyed the susceptibility of the stock turbo in my 99 a4 to aftermarket tweaking. Boost is a great thing
The Z was tuned for mid-range power. A turbo 4-cyl gasoline engine would be most likely tuned for top end power. Personally, I like top end power better on the track, but mid-range is good for street and auto-x. I think the Z would need to lose some weight (like 200 lbs) if you wanted an effective turbo 4-cyl setup.
