Default 103 octane

im going to the drag strip in a few weeks and being in cali we get the 91 craptane. I was thinking of picking up like 5 gallons of 103 octane and was wondering if there would be a noticible diff? In my last car i ran 101 once and it was a world of difference but it was also turboed.

It won't hurt your car and most likely will benefit from it.
Not to steal your thread but I was reading in Sport Compact Car and there has been article series called "Road racing for $7,000...." which has been very interesting. They have been building a Nissan Sentra SE-R with a strict budget and in the last article (November, 2003) they started discussing octane. This is what it said....

SR20DE's are not as good as the Honda B-series at running ludicrous compression on 91-octane pump gas, so making this engine happy requires careful tuning and a little bit of octane enhancement from our old toxic friend Toluene. Toluene is "look at me sideways and I'll give you cancer" nasty, and is commonly available through paint stores, where its sold as a solvent. Toluene also happens to be 114 octane, and is a common ingredient in octane boosters, as well as one of the more important octane enhancers in Japanese fuels. Remember those crazy 1.5 liter, 1,500-hp F1 engines from the '80's? They drank mostly Toluene, which also has particularly good resistance to detonation. Internet wisdom dictates dictates that when mised with 91-octane fuel, a 30% ratio of Toluene will yield a 97-plus octane mix. Oh, and this doesn't get the thumbs up from the EPA, so the cops who test your fuel when they pull you over can write you a ticket of somehting. Yeah, that'll happen.
I thought that was interested because that is the same product that I specify when I am doing caulking work in building envelope reapairs.

Octane numbers means "resistant level to detonation".

91 octane or 87 octane are NOT LOWER QUALITY GAS, they are simplely "less resistant to detonation" than 93 octane.

A TUNED car with higher compression are more prone to detonation, so you need higher octane gas.
A stock Z (or any car) are designed to run 91 octane, as long as it doesn't knock (which it won't), there will be no benefits running race fuel.
As stated in above article, if you've done a whole bunch engine work, higher octane gas will make your motor NOT KNOCK, that's all.
(Higer octane=better gas) = Greatest marketing scheme of all time.

***Note***
changing Exhaust and intake does not qualify as "tuned car", unless you've changed your muffler bearing ratio and higer-compound blinker fluid.

So you are saying that these dyno numbers that they took with different octanes on a stock Z are BS. Here is a link and you will see thatthey gained 5 hp with 100 octane instead of 91.

Just trying to answer a chemistry problem.

I've always been skeptical about the HP numbers by Sports Compact Car, the same way I am skeptical about changing intake and exhaust yields 23hp gain posted on Injen's site.
Sports Compact Car actually ran an article about a year ago trying to mod the Z, they actually showed "loss" in hp. (Anyone remember that article?)

There was an informative article by either MotorTrend or Road & Track, that has everything you need to know about Octane numbers.

I remember that article. They had a pre production Z and they hacked up a 911 exhaust system and ended up losing power. That was when there was absolutley no aftermarket parts for the car.
