Don't know for sure yet. Nothing over the winter. I kinda need to see what I'm feeling next spring. I'm thinking everything from a Bimmer to a Miata to an Exige S. I'm sure something will catch my eye. That's how it happened with the Z. Once it gets nice out next spring, I'll start itching for a new toy again.

I have a Miata and a 350z. Maybe it's because the Z is newer to me, but the Miata has not been driven much since the Z came into the picture. You will get some negative comments from guys who are insecure if you drive a Miata, but that's usually because they haven't driven one. The Miata will whip many cars with twice the power on a road course, but it is pretty slow in a straight line unless you go with forced induction. All that being said, if the exige S is truly an option I would get that before any of the other cars mentioned.
I'm looking for something a bit lighter and more toss-able. When I first got the Z, it was to be a DD. I would have bought an S2000, but for DD use in the Chicago area winters, I didn't want a convertible. I now have other vehicles that I use as DD. Since my next 'toy' doesn't need to meet my DD requirements, I want something a little more pure. A second-gen Miata fits that bill nicely, and can be easily had for under $8k. Plus, I've never owned a convertible. Hell, I could just get a Boxster S and call it a day. But like I said, it depends on my mood, and frankly, my job situation. I'm looking to move on from my current job, so my future unknown salary is going to dictate my toys. If I have a small amount of cash to throw around, Miata. Midrange, probably a last-gen M5. Touch more, add a Miata to the M5. If my next job pays me $$$, then it'll be the Exige S (drove one recently, can't get it out of my mind. Crazy car!).
I'm definitely going to test drive the 370Z, see how I like it, but there are certain styling issues I'm not thrilled with on the 370. But, then again, the Z wasn't even on my list last time I was looking for a car, but I fell in love on the test drive. We shall see. I really enjoy the car hunting process though. Should be fun!

The Miata is a great, pure, sports car. One of the reasons that I selected the Z over some other cars was that it was a coupe. A convertible just wasn't practical enough for me here in the Pacific Northwest. That being said, if I was going go do with a rag top, I may have ended up with the S2K or a Miata. Both nice cars. As ms350z wrote, the biggest issue with the Miata is from insecure young guys.
Another car to look at if you just want a toy would be a 3rd gen RX7. If you look around you can occasionally find a stock RX that hasn't been abused. That is a very fun car.

Do you honestly have a decent amount of time behind the wheel of a Miata on a winding road or an autocross track? If so I don't think you'd be calling it a BIGGGGGG downgrade. In what sense are you saying it is such a downgrade? The Miata has significantly less horsepower than the 350z, but it is also hundreds of pounds lighter. Any true driving enthusiast knows there are cars out there that can still be fun without a ton of power, case in point the Lotus Elise. Buy a Mazdaspeed Miata and bump up the boost or add a turbo to a non-turbo Miata and it will hang with a 350 even in a straight line. Each car has it's strengths and weaknesses... just saying don't rag on a car you don't have any real experience with.
