from the looks of the damage it doesnt look like a roll cage.......but a roll bar......
if it is a roll cage, the front hoop wasnt strong enough....wasn't designed right...

Def looks like a roll cage. Seems to me that the area that collapsed was in front of the rollcage so I would say it DID minimize damage to the roof.
roofline intact, or at least came close. The pillar is gonna get crushed in a
roll, but hopefully not past the point of the cage install. It's tough to tell if
this was even a roll considering the decent condition of the car's paint overall.
Most (all i've seen) rolls cause damage far past this. I think this could be
a side impact, though a strange one. I have a feeling the other side of op's
car is MANGLED.

If this was a full roll at any sort of speed - this cage worked. It kept the
roofline intact, or at least came close. The pillar is gonna get crushed in a
roll, but hopefully not past the point of the cage point. It's tough to tell if
this was even a roll considering the decent condition of the car's paint overall.

Edited to add: I would be pissed (an understatement) if that happened to a car I was trying to sell/buy.

it looks to me that its just a roll bar, kinda like the kirk roll bar, with no section fwd of the seats.....
if there was a full roll cage, with cross bar at the upper windshield section then that was one crappy designed roll cage.
in the last pic, looking inside by the door panel and dash, i see no bar going downward so i think it was just a roll bar aft of the seats.
but i agree, the roll bar behind the seats does look like it protected the roof from completely coming in..
