Once the motor is swapped, the ECU becomes useless. When you take out the ECU, the security system and other associated features go too. Car can probably be hotwired at that point.

You can get an LS1 pre-installed at the factory. Its called a Corvette, very nice car. Why bother in a 350Z? Unless you have time and $ to kill.

I don't understand why anybody would put an LS1 in a 350z. I totally understand putting one in a 240/260/280z, since they're very small and light, have massive engine bays, and the original powerplants made maybe 150-160hp... but the 350z isn't small and light, and modding the VQ (either version) has to be cheaper than doing this type of swap.

Why spend the money to put an engine that's 350hp/350tq stock into a car that had at minimum 287hp/274tq to start with? I always thought the point of SBC conversions into other cars was to make something freakishly fast at low cost. Isn't it far most cost-effective to turbo the VQ? I guess I just don't see the real benefit of spending the money to put an LS1 into a 3100+ lb car that already has an engine with tons of aftermarket F/I options.

I guess the 350z/SBC conversion isn't about cost-effectiveness.. and certainly not about preserving the spirit of the car.

I think its a reliability issue, and the huge potential the LS motors have with just bolt ons. Some of the FI guys have spent maybe 2-3 times the cost of what it would take to swap an LSx motor into a Z, and still have reliability issues. Not all of them, but I think the LSx is a safer more reliable alternative to big power without risking dependability while still saving some $$$.

There are a few other reasons as well. The LS1 is slightly lighter, smaller, and has a much lower center of gravity than a stock VQ35. By the time you would have added a F/I option you would have made the difference close to 200 lbs or more. A LSx swap is actually fairly inexpensive unless you need custom parts like engine mounts and transmission adapters.
