So first off let me say that Mckie Nissan in Rapid City South Dakota easily gets my approval for a great dealership. Let me start by saying, 2 weeks ago I noticed my transmission grinding in 2nd and 6th gear.
2nd gear I could understand as it's used alot, but 6th gear hm? So I looked into my older service docs (great thing to have) and found out in the 30k service they did not service the transmission, clutch, or brake fluids. So I had that done. My car now has 39k miles on it so it's still under the factory warranty and soon to be recovered by the security plus that the original owner purchased which brings the warranty to 7 years/100k miles. So 2nd gear no longer is an issue but 6th gear grinds.
Still my 6th gear grinds unless I shift slowly into 6th. The service writer at the dealership knows his Z's and very well indeed. Explains to me why it does it. I couldn't tell you exactly what he said but it's going to end up being the 6th gear syncro that's the issue.
Now without hessitation, the service writer then schedules me an appt to have the mechanic test drive the car. Now I know exactly how to duplicate the problem but the last time they said this happened Nissan did not allow them to crack open the transmission and warrantied a brand new transmission.
So after all this I'm terribly excited. Brand new transmission soon, and hopefully they will warrant the transmission and do a 4.083 gear install to kill time. So I can't wait until my car gets this new transmission and gear install. I'm just glad I get a Z guy at my Nissan dealer who happens to own quite a few 70 year model Z's that understands how we drive and what the Z's are all about.
Huge props to Mckie Nissan in Rapid City.
Also for those of you still under warranty. I strongly suggest this. When I first purchased my 06 2 years ago I knew it had the factory warranty. It wasn't until a few days ago I found out that the original owner had the security plus added on. I contacted Nissan NA in TN and they were extremely helpful. They are allowing me to contact the previous owner to sign over the security plus warranty to expand my current warranty.
Just ask you Nissan dealer for your warranty info and tell them your VIN. All your previous warranty work pops up and shows if you have or qualify for the security plus. Which to me is truly amazing.
Whoever says Nissan doesn't stand by there warranties is a liar. I'm a true believer. Don't believe me contact Nissan NA for yourself and see for yourself.

same gear grind issue on my 08. grinds going into 6th gear from time to time (randomly still =\ ) between the right neutral position and going into 6th gear. irritating, and the dealer couldnt replicate it this time. always gets me goin from 1-2-3 to speed up to 45 then going into 6th to ride it out. glad to hear you are getting taken care of tho! i also have the 7yr/100k warranty so i plan for a new transmission eventually =]
/// THREAD REVIVAL ///
So I found this thread which basically describes the issue I'm having. Intermittent grinding shifting into 6th gear either when shifting hard or going direct from 3rd. I dropped off the Z at the dealership today and they couldnt replicate the problem so I drove down there from work with a buddy to show the service manager the issue.
Before I even get in the car he basically tells me that he is not planning on doing any work to the transmission because he could not replicate the problem. We go for a ride (so to speak) and the first time I shift into 6th it makes a nice audible grinding noise. I cant replicate it after that.
I figure I'm good to go but he basically says that he still does not know what the problem is and that since he himself could not reproduce it is unwilling to do any work on the car.
He's got somewhat of a point but my question is will me calling corporate Nissan do any good here or are they just going to stick by his word??
Any other options I have other than taking it to some other dealers?
Thanks,
Alex

Mine also began to grind shortly after getting the fluid flushed and refilled. I believed that they had used Mobil. This was about 2 years ago, I have a 04 ZR. Over the summer I flushed it myself and refilled it with Redline. It now feels like I have a brand new Transmission and engine. Redline works, trust me.

Which Redline mix are you putting in? I have a new tranny from grinding last year, and it is starting to feel sticky like the other one, but no grinding yet. If Redline will slow or stop it, I'll do it.

Use it for grinding type issues, but if you're having slipping issues, keep what's in there. Usually, all the crap in the old fluid makes the gears engage better.

* Safe for brass synchros, as it lacks the reactive sulfurs found in most GL-5 oils that cause damage
* Offers quicker shifts, perfect synchronizer coefficient of friction
* Eliminates notchy shifting, even when cold
* High performance gear protection and longer synchro life
* Recommended for GL-1, GL-3 and GL-4 applications, as well as where most special synchromesh fluids are specified
