Coincidence or Big Brother plant in my car.....
I have never brought my car to a dealer. I have purchased a new keyless entry fob and new key from Surrey Nissan about 8 months ago. My SES light came on a few days ago. I got a Service Reminder in the mail from Surrey Nissan. It actually said that I was due for my 28,000km service and they recommended my air filters be replaced at that time.
I have 27,780km on my odometer. How the hell did they know it that? My local mechanic said it may have a GPS transmitter built in that sends info to Nissan Canada. He told me to go ahead and change the air filters and re-set the ECU by finding the steps on line.
By the way, the one for the 350z did not work. The steps I found worked were from the Nissan TItan forum. Almost identical steps except slight variation to the timing...
The SES light is gone and she runs even better than before....

if you drive your car the "average" amount of km, i'd be willing to guess that its more likely that nissan just sent you a 28k reminder when you were likely to hit 28k based on your "average" driving according to when you bought the car, as opposed to the possibility that they may be tracking your mileage.
They usually send me reminders in the mail but I'm always well under the mileage they state... I think they go based on the year and distance driven between maintenance intervals...
And no, you do not have a GTR, so Big Brother is not watching you...

Nissan just wants more of your money and it is just a coincidence, and they are just going by an estimate of the mileage they expect that you have.
Yes, the dealership does make $ (little $) on a service call - but the cost of installing a SATCOMM system to trigger visits? (Big $$)
And publicity cost when found (eventually of course)? Not worth it.

Hell, I still get maintenance reminders for my 1997 Toyota Avalon, a car I sold three years ago.
There's nothing sinister going on. Every car manufacturer sends out maintenance offers and other reminders based on the estimated annual mileage you would accumulate. That average is correct for the vast majority of owners. Did you by chance sign up under the Owners setion of the Nissan.com site? It asks you for your initial mileage and annual mileage - they can figure it off of that too.

ummm... I get crap from the dealer saying my Z is due for service for XXXXX miles... I got rid of my Z in 2005... they assume you put X number of miles on per month based on averages people drive...
