I dyno'd my 5AT with only 2K miles on it and my numbers were consitent with the other 5AT that dyno'd the same day. You can see my dyno graphs on my web page. I can't post the images from work but you can see them here.

so did you dyno it in manu-matic mode and take it up to fourth gear? or did you leave it in automatic and wait for it to kick into fourth gear and then take through the rpms slowly, so it wouldnt go into 5th gear? i really would like to know. ive asked at least two people and what they told me wasnt very descriptive. i redyoned today in manu-matic and got the same 4th gear results. i would greatly appreciate any reply that could tell me blow by blow how you did it, because right now i'm pretty much clueless.

I've dyno'd 9 pulls on two occasions all with similar results.

TCS was turned off. If you have VDC it should be turned off as well. AC off of course.

Car was put into manual shift mode and shifted from 1, 2, 3 and to 4th gear and then pushed to redline.

ok let me get this straight.. The 350Z AT only dynos 215 HP? isnt that a 25% loss?

I know manuals on average loose about 17% and i would think automatics would loose about 20-22% at the MAX...

Why are the automatics loosing so much HP to the wheel? Is this normal?

I guess the Torque converter is never totally locked up and the fluids keep compressing. but 215 HP sound right with a 6mt at about 20 more 235+

Hopefully I'll dyno tomarrow at Stillen at 250+whp and if I make it, I'll tell you what I had to do to get it...and in I don't its more mods....

thats how i dynoed the first time and again today. today i dynoed at a max of 225.8 hp and 279 ft./lbs. of tq. this is an outrageous amount of tq, and would have to be less than 0% drivetrain loss to get this much tq. i think its because of the tq converter that i cant get a straight reading on the tq. this equals out to about 22% drivetrain loss on the hp, but then the tq was obviously way to high.

Dyno sounds right, now pickup a socket wrench and start bolting on some mods. Start with high flow cats and crank pulley. That should put you into deep 240's

Didn't make it at Stillen 245 whp in 3rd but no A/F so I'm going back to Powertrain to retest for the info I need to reset the ECU. Running out of options to get the 5hp I want. Won't go with a ugly plenum or cams but might now consider the best header available. Well see after the retest and adjustments are made.

mr.twisted, didn't you get 243/236 without the ECU? I'd expect you to get more than 2hp from a $600 ecu program.

I think you may hit your magic 260 on powertrain's dyno. when do you plan to run it again?

Nice! So you got ~22rwhp/14rwtq with highflow cats, pulley, and ecu.

RT cats @ +13/+6 gain
Pulley + ECU @ +10/+5 gain

Considering the parasitic losses of AT, thats pretty good gains. Congrats!

Can't wait to see how jason@performance scores tonight with his RT cats. I'm so tempted to get these now.

Default How a dyno works

I think some people are not too sure about how a dyno works here. Let me take an example of dynoing a car in 3rd gear vs. 4th gear.

3rd gear ratio: 1.472
4th gear ratio: 1.000

When you dyno, you might think that since 3rd gear has a higher ratio, you will dyno a much higher number in 3rd gear. However that is not the case. I am speaking from experience with a Dynojey dynometer. I would think that other dynos are the same but I cannot say that for certain.

The drums factor in gear ratio by calculating the speed of the wheels to the speed of the tranny and give you the results as if you are 1:1.

Technically you can dyno in any gear and they should give you pretty much the same numbers (+/- 5hp/tq due to heat and whatnot).
