just spoke to headquarters in LA
Whats up guys...this might be old news to some, but i sure didnt know this.
A rep from nissan headquarters from LA just called me, as i had left him a message before to call me back...i asked him about the specs, and this is what he said..
"as of right now, Nissan knows the specs of the vehicle, but we are not allowed to give it out because there is a slight chance that number might change comes the release date".
well, i think its dumb that nissan has the specs but wont tell us.
i mean, could the only reason as to why the rep couldnt just sneak the answer to me over the phone be because the numbers might change?? that seems kind of funny to me.
so what if u tell me and it comes out not to be true? ya? and? the world wont come to an end u know if that was the case. lol
well, idk folks..just thought i would share with ya what happend..
anyone out there knows the REAL reason as to why nissan wont give out the specs? other then the retarded reason as to the specs might change! Jmanz? zisme? anyone?
zee ya

His reason for not giving out the spec is pretty legit....they did that same thing when i was anticipating my '99 Jetta and my dad was waiting for his s2000. Manufacureers general never relase any non-hard-core specs that have even the slighest chance of being changed, because any word from a dealer about a cars specs can be considered cannonical (solid word of truth) and if changes are later implemented there can be some rather nasty ramifications. Heck the new honda accord 2003's go on sale the same month we get our Z's an not a SOUL outside of honda design firm or their manufacturing plant know what one looks like, only that its a radicaly new style...and no one WILL know what they look like untill days before it goes on sale, theyre even being deliverd to the us under heavily secured cover and unveiled at the dealerships. Its just how car manufactures are these days.

well, there could be a few reasons...let's try to figure them out.
1. Perhaps the specs are outrageously BETTER than anyone anticipated and they want to release them with fanfare, and all of us the pre-ordered will feel like geniuses.
I call this, the Dream Scenario
2. Perhaps the specs are outrageously WORSE than anyone anticipated and they want to release them quietly, and all of us the pre-ordered will feel like idiots.
I call this, the Nightmare Scenario
3. Perhaps it's not really importnat because most of us have already made our decision to buy and will be happy with the car no matter what the HP turns out to be.
I call this the Let's Just Wait and See Before We All Get Excitied and Lose Our Heads...Scenario

Whose dream would that be?
I know what you meant though, BETTER right?

These are a 3 responses from ZISME in "the other forum" on this subject. You can read between lines as well as I do. Look like the Nissan rep. you talked to just reading the party line to you.

Sorry..can't give you an exact date yet. Engineering has not signed off on final specs. Getting close though. By the way Motor Trend does not have a exclusive arrangement to be the first to test the Z.

Specs don't get signed off on immediately after they are final...but they can't be communicated until they are signed off on....don't worry, everything is fine.

G35 Coupe will have less horsepower than Z. We are in no danger of coming in under 280+ that was promised for Z.

Plus, if you'll look at some announced and then actual HP figures for Nissan cars, the cars have come out putting less HP than advertised (above mentioned nightmare scenario). I don't think this will happen here for 3 reasons:
1) Ghosn
2) Zisme
3) Nissan 180

unfortunely if that happens, i'm going to be pissed that i just spent 38K + for a car with lower hp ratings than advertised!
I highly doubt Nissan would do that. It would be like what happened to Firestone. No consumer would trust them anymore.
But if it did...i'll be the first to file a class action lawsuit.
Watch it be a 320HP beast! HAHAH! WOOHOO! BTW, there is no way they haven't finalized the specs of this car, it takes months from parts to dealers... and it's set to be in dealers 1st of August... This means it is probably already in the middle of production now. with end of next month being crating and shipping for the US dealers...

I don't think it will be 320hp. In my view, any tweaking option North of 300 will be saved for future model year (2005) as a kicker. Did you see the game Corvette play lately, i.e. continuous improvement to make the model look fresh.
As for the spec., if you read between the line of what ZISME said, sound like the hardware is finalized, but the paper work is not. Also, tweaking the software in the ECU module (reprogramming the same part) can be done with little manufacturing lead time. This is a general practice in computer manufacturing business.
Late tweaking of horsepower and torque requires resubmitting for emissions certification, so even though they have the technical capability to modify the SW until the last minute, they won't be able to do so because of regulatory certification requirements.

Good point! EPA lead time is probably non trevial. I am glad computer doesn't have to go through EPA.
