Around my parts, the pay/benefits packages of government workers has been drawing some pretty intense scrutiny with the high unemployment in the private sector. Pay increases have been scaled back, contributions to health insurance has risen, hiring is down. Used to be the pay was lower due to the better benefits/pensions, but somewhere along the way that changed to high pay/great benefits/ and marginal performance accepted - an attitude that it was an automatic job-for-life. Not saying everyone, mind you, just a general big picture thing. Still, more security in general with a government job but a lot of exceptions and not just in broke Cali either.

This is quite accurate....at least in the State of CA. I received 45% in benefits on top of my very good salary as an Administrator III. I have a $100k life insurance and all my medical bills are covered for life.

Really Cali should fire about half their administrators. I had worked in private industry and owned a good size business for 10 years, so I could not believe the screwed up way the state does business. I worked at the university for 20 years just so that I could get some of my taxes back. They would give me these $20k raises cuz they thought I was a genius. hahaha In the real world I was pretty average. The public sector is an area where an average person with good common sense can excel.

All this may change though. They are beating the crap out of the state unions and cutting salaries by using furlough days etc. My university could easily cut 20 administrators that don't have anyone reporting to them. They just made them administrators as a way of giving them more money. People should see what sate agencies do with their tax money and now that things are tight they are looking at these state workers.

I am an old guy and I have never seen a recession this deep and this long.

I'm 31 and my parents still help me build my cars. What am I supposed to do tell them I don't want the money. Still live at home while making 55k a year. That not as much as some here but when its all free and clear. I live pretty good and can do whatever I want with my money. If I want to spend it all on my car, then thats ok

Who wouldn't want my life?

Not me. 31 + living at home + parents still help support you.

You sound like the 17 year olds on this thread.

Believe it or not, most men don't want to live off their mom's teet.

Nice edit. Add that 10k in there.

Default My List

Considering I started driving in 1993:

1984 Chrysler Turbo Laser (don't let the turbo fool you, a whopping 125bhp)
1991 Ford Probe (utter garbage)
2001 Subaru Outback Wagon (2.5L 4cyl)
2008 Nissan 350z Touring!

I'm 32 and I can't stop standing on the gas pedal. This is not the car for a 16yo, no matter how "responsible" they are.

You're 31, your parents still support you, and you think we want to be you because you "have it made"?
