Default Chipmunks in the Z, need advice

Hey guys,

so a few months ago I noticed some acorns and acorn shells in my engine bay, in the battery compartment and in the air box. It seems that I was getting some unwanted visitors in the car, likely chipmunks as there a plenty of them in the woods around my house. I vacuumed everything up and the little bastards were coming back. So, I sprayed the engine bay up with Febreeze to test the theory of animals not liking perfume. Well, it seems that this has worked quite well. I haven't seen any signs of the critters in the engine bay since then.

So, this morning I fired up the car and when I went around a corner, I heard a sound coming from passenger side dash that sounded like rocks in the can being tossed around. Sure enough, I saw an acorn fall out from under the dash The little ***** bastards are back and now they found a way into the car. The good news is that I am not smelling anything funky so I don't think anything died in the car. I think I hear another acorn rolling inside a dash somewhere, not sure where though. Do you think I can employ another tactic of perfuming the car to deter the animals from getting in? How are they getting into the dash? I did some searching and it seems that people suggested dryer sheets. Does that work based on smell?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I think I'll have to take the passenger dash apart to find that stupid acorn and inspect if there's any damage. What a PITA.

Put some poison in there.. That should do it!

I heard of dyer sheets in the intake side of the air box in the cowl or something like that. Suppose to get rid of fowl smells from rotting leaves or something.. But I have no clue how to get rid of rodents in the car... That sounds really really bad man...

In for updates!

it is not that they are in your dash. It is that they have entered into your heating BOX. due to the fact that z's also do not have cabin filters they can run a muck and yes crawl through to drop into the car. i suggest you go under the dash and remove the blower motor and clean up the acorns that they stashed. then park the car somewhere else for a while.

Wow, lets HOPE that they only when through your ventilation!

Could very possibly have damaged wiring along the way..Rodents + Wiring = All kindsa bad yo.

Good luck with this mess, Start taking apart that dash and getting those things out, find out where they entered and figure out a method to remove them...or get a garage and start parking there "/

Agree. The rodents are not there for fun, they are searching for materials to build a nest.

Some odors such as ammonia will keep them away. Unfortunately ammonia will keep you away. Mothballs work - and are tolerable to humans. There are also small mothball sachets that can be hidden.

do not believe none of that mumbo jumbo about moth *****, and smells and or things that makes noises. they DO NOT WORK!!!!!!

The things are mammals like us and can tolerate such smells and noises just as good as we can. I had same issue at my house with chips/squirrels. Only thing that worked for both was to trap them and take them FAR FAR AWAY. Because now your car has the marked smell that they leave for other chip monks to come and hang out. So once you get rid of them you have to clean up extremely well. Or else others will find the hot spot to hang out.

I had found at one time a good site for when i had the problem that let you know about them and how to get rid of them the right way. I cannot find it now for you, but I do however remember them stating that all the gimmicks that are out there DO NOT WORK. So here is a site that should work for you.

I did end up buying traps and became the trap king for about 2 weeks. In total i caught 22 squirrels and 15 chipmunks. I took them all miles away from the shop and dropped them off in the same spot so they could all find each other. Less you like making some kinda STEW you should do the same. LOL

If you remove the black plastic parts near the windshield wiper on the passenger side, you will see the air intake for the ventilation system. That's where they most likely got in. They shouldn't be able to get any further than the blower motor (it's kinda like a cage) up under the passenger side dash unless they chewed a hole somewhere. There is probably a bunch of junk in your blower so I'd remove it and clean it.

You could try finding an air filter that fits the ventilation system opening to block off their path to the interior.

I believe he wants his car to continue smelling good, although I'm not going to argue your point, bc it's valid.

Build a garage, and your problems are solved

im sure it can be done creatively so as not to spray directly on the interior such as soaking towelettes in platic containers around the car etc...

Fox urine doesn't work either. And it ends up smelling worse than the rodents do.

Add a steel wool 'filter' for the intake too?
