imo with bolt ons you won't really get a lot more performance out of the Z (N/A). I would personally pick whatever exhaust note I liked, buy that cat back, then work on cosmetic stuff.
My z with a plenum spacer, high flow cats, intake, exhaust and tune didn't really feel all that far from stock. would have rather saved the money.
If you owe any money on the car put the $1500 towards the loan.

Work on suspension and cosmetics. Power wise you won't get much more without triple the cash. Find a nice exhaust you like. Save up for some wheels and tires.
From what Ive read these cars and their computers seem pretty receptive to aftermarket exhausts without additional tuning. Is that a fair assumption? Any recommendations in that price range that are DIYer friendly?

What do you mean by that the z does not gain substantial amount of horsepower until you go FI. So, no that is probably not fair to assume that. There are parts you can put on the z that will actually cause it to lose horsepower.
