By how many wires its hooked up to it I'm guessing it's an aftermarket alarm box..motion sensor box exacly it has a screw on it that adjusts the sensitivity of it, might also control other things like remote start. Do you have an aftermarket alarm? try unplugging that box and check if your alarm/start/doors all work.

Upon closer inspection of the UD (unidentified device), it has come to my attention that it is in fact an IMCU (independent modular control unit).

It's an alarm sensor, as others said. The dial adjusts the sensitivity.

It is an aftermarket alarm system - the min/max is to adjust sensitivity of the alarm trigger.

I removed tons of them, I would advise removal of it. There are a lot better systems and from the look of it that is quite an old model

If this were an F-350 Super Duty forum I'd say it's a trailer brake controller. This, however, would be an extremely unlikely accessory for a Z....

Maybe it's just a BoUOaF (Box of Unknown Origin and Function).

i believe it is an anti theft device. perhaps it needs a chip or what not to put into it at one time or another( to start the vehicle), and maybe before the re sale it was disabled. Otherwise if you notice that min/max adjustment it could be a decibel alarm. that adjustment could be the level of noise and or vibration b4 it goes off. Other then that may or may not be for your audio but i'd go with anti theft device. Here is an idea...find some kind of Part # on the unit and GOOGLE it!

1st guess - don johnson's equalizer amp (and he is mad and wants it back!)

2nd guess some kinda' alarm.

Disconnect it (remove the connectors). If the stereo stops - we know it is nr.1 and if the car won't start it is nr. 2

(i am betting a jelly donut on numbah one!! It is why the stereo sounds like @zz)

i am sure if you unplug it and something happens then you would know asap what it does and what it is for. Otherwise that to me is the worst place to put anything. Also why i said anti theft device only do to the fact that i see those things exactly where you're picture is showing it on customers cars for "starting" the vehicle with a slip in chip.
