Default Need experienced help on shopping for a Z

Ok so i've been in love with 350z's since they came out in 2003 and i decided im gunna buy one! I want a 2007 bc i definatly want the hr motor. i dont really want to spend more than 17500 on one either but wanna keep the mileage as low as possible. I found one in alvarado, texas that this guy is selling for 14500 obo but it has a rebuilt title. the car looks great and the guy is being really good about giving me details. he bought it from carmax so wouldnt that mean it was inspected pretty well? also he said hes has looked it over thoroughly and hasnt noticed much of any evidence from the accident from the first owner except that the passenger front strut tower was welded. Im not the best mechanically so can someone tell me if that is a big concern. to me it seems like it might be but idk. he said i could have it taken to nissan and inspected if i would like. so basically im asking you guys do you think it would be worth it to talk the guy down to lets say 13000 or so or should i pay what i was originally expecting to pay for something with a clean title. i plan on keeping it only as a hobby car for weekends and nice days and garaging it in the winter and i want to eventually do some heavy modding once i graduate school for autotech. thanks alot guys appreciate the help. Btw, does anyone live close that would be willing to go check it out for me? he said if i have someone close let him know and he will set up for someone to take a look at it for me

clear title all the way man, dont do it! I tell you now....if u ever wanted to sell it you would not get your money worth out of it. With a clear and clean title you will not have no where near the trouble selling it as if you where if u wanted to sell a car that has a rebuilt title. I would rather pay more knowing the car has never had any problems in the past, especially if iam going to put down that amount of money on something. Now if it was like a work truck or something i would use to beat on and use as a DD that i just didnt care about, well then thats a dif story, but lets face it. This will be your pride and joy, dont go cheap with it. Go all out and u will sleep better at night knowing you bought a car with no problems in its past

yea i get what your saying. its just the whole being able to put money i save towards aftermarket parts but it definatly would be my pride and joy. so i was also tossing around the idea that if i found a good deal on an auto transmission, i could take it then maybe do a transmission swap when im done with autotech school? i dont know if i would have the experience yet to do it but its just an idea. i want this car to be my first project once i finally know what im doing when it comes to cars. idk but i think im gunna take your advice and wait for something a bit better.

Do a little reading here about all the problems with the manual transmissions and clutches, and you'll just want to stick with the automatics. They're bullet-proof, and they drive just fine.

Forget about switching transmissions. You'd be way better off to buy a car with the type you want.

Think with your gut on this one man, buying a salvaged title car is a big hit or miss. No telling what really happened to it. Question for you....you said that the strut tower was welded?? What did they have to weld?? Sounds like a pretty hard hit on the pass. side. Also to keep in mind, messing with suspension like that....it will never be the same. If you really want the hr motor, just buy a cheap 2003-5 Z and swap an hr...in the end you'd be spending just as much as that salvaged piece....

First thing that stuck out in my mind is that Carmax will not put re, or salvage title cars on their lots. They always check the carfax before purchasing the car, and do a thorough inspection prior to giving a quote. I know I have sold two of my cars to them. My friend had a very clean very well kept Tahoe when they were hot..... but it had been in an accident that that was mostly cosmetic, but did have some repair to the front passenger engine bay.... no bueno... they wouldnt even give her a quote. Sooooo I personally would say no. I dont think he bought it from car max.. and if so he was the one that wrecked it.

If it doesn't have a clean title, you're gambling with your money, plain and simple. I don't know your situation, but I'd rather spend a few grand more than risk my 13 grand on a salvage title.

+1

Stay away from a salvaged title. Think ahead for the long run...

avoid salvaged and rebuilt at all cost unless you want to keep the car. I bought mine with a re-built title, but I was young and naive when I did. Didn't think much of it, and car looked fine. Luckly the car just had fender and passenger door damage, and everything else was fine. I've had the car for almost 5 years and no problems whatsoever except the things i replaced because the body work was insulting. I wanted to trade it in a few years back, and some dealership didn't want to touch it, although it looked like it was in perfect condition. Now I am stuck with the car for the most part and will probably have to wait till its worth 5k before I can sell it. But I love the car too much, and will probably drive it until it dies. But don't settle if you know you are going to sell it.

14.5k on a salvaged title? um no.

you should be able to find a clear title car in that year for the same price.

Title says "rebuilt" for a reason. It was totalled. Think about it.

I sure have, I do it all the time. Although, It's sort of hard to read something that looks like it was typed by a 12 year old.
