Simple cleaning questions...
Hi all,
I have not been posting much as I have been driving all the time. But I do have a simple question for the people with a good understanding of what is safe to do to clean a car.
After I have driven for awhile, I notice a large amount of "grey dust" on my wheel. I assume this is from the very gentle driving and braking that I do everyday. I read about claying the car and learned about metal shaving being generated from brake pads.
In between car washes...
1. what is the best/safest way to clean the wheels of this dust?
2. what can I use to clean the tires?
3. Can I use windex to clean the windows and the lights?
4. What can I use to clean the inside car surfaces...the plastic of the door, the dash, and steering wheel?
5. What can I use to spot clean a bug splat or bird dropping from a painted surface?
I feel a little silly asking these questions, but I learned how much I DID NOT know about washing a car from reading posts here, I thought I would check to make sure before I did it wrong.
Thanks,
MBEGuy

Do a search for "detailing session" and you will find answers to most of your questions in this 8 or 9 part series.
Some answers you might not find (can't remember):
1. Wash with car soap. Use a wheel cleaner for pesky spots. After cleaning, wax with the rest of the car so that they stay cleaner and better protected.
2. Squirt with detailing spray and wipe off. If waxed, they will clean up easy.
3. see search
4. see search
5. Usually car soap will get them off if you keep the exterior protected with a fresh wax every so often. They make stronger bug and tar removers but they strip wax. Clay bars also help to get these off and they strip wax too. Don't leave bug splats and bird droppings on any longer than necessary (1 week is probably too long). Nissan clearcoat doesn't stand up to the acid very well.

Waxing wheels is almost a moot point, but slightly helpful. Carnauba wax melts at 170º, and during hard driving, your wheels get hotter than that. If you can, put a little polymer sealant on there after cleaning. That should REALLY help with the dust. Remember, the least agressive approach needed, whether it be polishing or cleaning, most of the time, just a car wash solution after washing will do it.
