Why is the 350z becoming a civic, rather than a Supra?
It happens to any car, even more rare cars like Ferrari's and Bentley's, there are some awful ones out there and the only difference the amount of money spent. Does that diminish the rich history and legend of the marque? No.
As long as there are no taste police, which was a statement made to me by a Ferrari salesman, there's going to be terribly molested cars on the road.
The F & F movie set the aftermarket on fire and with that comes Pep Boys type trinkets to put on the cars.....some people don't know when to say when.
You never know which cars will be 'legends'. The Integra was a new car in the mid 80's and had steady development then peaked with the first Type R's, most would say. Then Honda loses their way and it dies. Imagine Nissan trying to reinvent/continue the legend of the Skyline, I think when the G first arrived and it was called the 350 Skyline in other lands they found out right quick it wasn't sufficient to uphold the legend. Alternatively the GT-R with it's amazing launch abilities kind of takes up the mantle.
Seems each popular car has a relatively small window to make it's mark. Market conditions kill off a lot of them.
Agreeing with the original poster.... some cars can be too popular... which will be the case with the new 86/FRS/BRZ because the sports car market is starved for rear drive cars.
I was at the Detroit International Auto Show in 2000 when the 350Z concept debuted, I remember hating it! IIRC the hatch area was mashed a bit flatter. The first time I saw one on the road I loved it, it was so different and I was really digging Nissan's industrial design phase. I now own an '07 Nismo...to me the unique front and rear facia's are more timeless than the normal Z.
So even though popular and large in numbers I still think the 350Z will be prominent in future articles and books written about sports cars. The poorly modded ones will not be a scar on it.

It's because 350's are cheap. Even when they were brand new they were only $50k~
If you want a rare car, spend more money and get something else.
I love my z, I don't care that it's not an overly expensive car, I don't care that people buy them and rice them out. Because in the end, all their **** cars only make me feel better about mine, and make mine look better.

kiss *** LMFAO thats cute little one. Notice my amount of posts. Which means I don't converse here often at all, which also means I don't know let alone probably had 1 conversation with BMCcann.. Maybe you didn't realize the subliminal message in his words
"it may be an affordbale car for somene whos only got 15k to spend.. but my pockets are "deep".. and therefore the car they see at the light represents that difference easily and adequately."
makes me wonder maybe your one of those 8 or 9k 350z owners O_O

I see 350Z's a lot less in Cincy, Ohio than when I lived in SoCal. But shear volume and the depreciation brought on the 'riced' out Z crowd. For now I rarely drive my 05 stockish Z but it always puts a smile on my face when I do drive it. Sure, I would love to own an FD one day, but for now I am happy for what I got. But I hope one day Nissan puts a snail under the hood of it's Z car though.
I see a lot of Z's in NY, most are completely stock or ricey. There are also a bunch of nicely modded Z's, but those seem to be the minority. Hopefully if I keep my Z long enough and in good enough condition, and if I don't cover the damn thing in plasti dip it will have a little tiny bit of that Supra/FD mystique. But I doubt it.

Unfortunately, the mid-90's was just the wrong time in the "affordable" Japanses sports car world. The RX7, Supra and Z32 were beginning to be too expensive (Z32 prices were similar to that of the current Z34) in a slowing market segment at the time. All three, including the 3000GT, saw the end. Although the Z32 continued in Japan till 2000.
Then the 350Z came out all by itself from that old gang, and it was very affordable compared to the Z32 from 7 years before that (US market). Hence the volume they produced. But the Z has always been produced in decent quantities ever since the 240Z. An affordable, reliable sports car has always been the name of the Z's game. When the day comes, and who knows when that will be, the Z will be a memorable/desirable sports car for collectors. We just have to wait for all the "ricer tainted" Zs to perish for this to happen.
Sacrifice is needed for others to survive and prosper. This will never change. Neither will my love for my 350Z.

Of the GTR... The Z isn't the flagship sports car it's a GTR.. Supra's were the Flagship not the MR2... What's the best Mazda out that BEATS the RX7? the RX8? lol... GTR killed the Z. If you want a SPORTS car from Nissan, it's the GTR.
give it time.. keep her clean.. the 350 especially the 07-09 will prove to be desired! time will tell... if it doesn't who cares.. mine is pristine, and actually quite rare being a 6spd black roadster in better than showroom condition
Those that are into mods recognize other modified cars readily on the street.. no matter the make. It's my opinion that those cars that are way over the top, or just look like cheese, make the tastefully modified cars look that much better.
The Z is the best selling sports car in the world. And the 350Z is the best selling Z car so it will never be a rare car. There was nothing in the 350 that was truely unique or revolutionary. From the beginning Zs were made to be affordable sports cars. In my opinion the 350 and Zs in general will be remembered as a car that lets the average person experience the feel and the pride of owning a sports car.
Aren't you happy they sold well? If it didn't sell well it would go the way of Supras and RX-7's, DEAD. Dumb argument, "I wish the Z didn't sell well so the car will be rare and they will discontinue making them." However, you might get what you wish for the way 370's are selling.
we all got lucky that this car doesnt suck, otherwise it was a poser car to begin with lol. I snatched it up new at 37k.. now kids buy it for 12k.. was never that much in the first place. but still..
At least the 370 stepped it up a bit.. but then, well.. none of us really loved that car.. not enough to trade in/up.
Unless you own a Porsche 9XX, thers no reason to status chase w our cars I say.. but, theres still alot to be said for a car thats done right w quality parts.
And theres also as much to be said for MANGO!!

It starts with a beautiful design from all angles.Thats what the 350 has.
I bought my 03 when they first came out.I've had it...10 yrs!
Still looks fresh because, like with every car I've owned,I have done "upgrades" that compliment the design, not hide it.For sure, many ricer Z's out there. How many posts from newbie/teens have you read that start off,"Ever since I can remember,I've always wanted a..."Thats saying alot. Its about getting your dream.Thats what we all share
if you really appreciate the Z.I go way back.Farther than most of you.I remember
when I bought a new 240.It was the same buzz. The same group of guys that saw
something in this car that was new.Years earlier, when Jaguar released the XKE,it was the same "got to have " passion. The Z series is the most successful sportscar franchise
in history. Its a shame that some ruin the car and turn it into something that they think
is better. Its all about taste. Some have it,some don't.There will always be a debate on
what the hell is taste in the first place. All I know is some members of this forum have hit perfection with their Z's.The best widebody I've seen belongs to a guy I know in AZ.
There are many other examples of endless hours spent, depleted bank accounts for the love of this car,the Z.Maybe some of us that try our darndest for perfection in our cars
can teach a newbie the "right way".Instead of flaming these guys, how about taking some time,PM a few with some ideas.Who knows,we may lower the ricer population
or at least send them to live in one area.
