start up on hills
i just got my 03z last saturday as my first manual car. i am not that afraid of starting up at a stop or traffic light but i freak out at hills. today i practice at local and i try to start up at a hill on a stop sign, i stalled. i smell my clutch is burning and i feel my engine have a little bit trouble to start up. looking for any kind of help for newbie manual driver. BTW Im at sf. the worst place for manual transmission car.
e-brake on.
little throttle.
slowly let out clutch - when it starts to grab, release e-brake.
do not use the throttle and feathering the clutch to hold the car on the hill. that will toast your clutch not to mention the risk of it grabbing and launching you into traffic.

When I picked up my Z it was only the 3rd time I drove a manual and had to drive it through a busy hilly city in rush hour traffic.
The most important thing is to stay calm, the moment you panic will be the moment where it all goes bad because you really won't roll back as much as you think you will.
We've all been through it and it's nice to give encouragement to newbies, you will be surprise at how much better and better you'll get each day!

+1 on the don't panic part.
If you're worried about it, use the e-brake technique. After you practice it a couple of times, it's very simple.
I still use it on big hills to make life easier!
