why do cars record mileage?

why do cars record mileage?
I think about this occasionally, why not record total revolutions? by the current standards, you are penalized for driving at high speeds on the highway(considered least damaging to the car), yet rewarded for stop and go traffic(worst on the car).
whats worse, your not accountable for idleing, but you are for coasting...
if the gauge measured mileage and Revolutions, you could tell what the cars average RPM was during its life, and thus how the car had been driven.
yes that may hurt some, most of us infact. but it would make more sense as a gauge of the cars age.

Most construction equipment that I have used had an hour meter but, this is probably because some of the equipment, such as a back-ho, is used primarily in a stationary position. It is definitley a good indicator of wear if used in conjunction with mileage.

As on board computers become more advanced I am sure all sorts off interesting programs will become available.
I imagine one day your car could collect all sorts of data store it, produce reports, and transfer the data.

Recording hours only records motor use. Recording miles (ON AVERAGE) is a better indicator of distance traveled and therefore for the avg person how much the CAR was used not just how long the engine was running. But I agree, it is not a perfect method but I would argue better than hours when taking into account total vehicle usage.
