Default why do cars record mileage?

I think about this occasionally, why not record total revolutions? by the current standards, you are penalized for driving at high speeds on the highway(considered least damaging to the car), yet rewarded for stop and go traffic(worst on the car).

whats worse, your not accountable for idleing, but you are for coasting...

if the gauge measured mileage and Revolutions, you could tell what the cars average RPM was during its life, and thus how the car had been driven.

yes that may hurt some, most of us infact. but it would make more sense as a gauge of the cars age.

Default mileage

Wouldn't it be a better idea to record hours (on an hour meter?) I believe this is a more accurate indication of wear.

Most construction equipment that I have used had an hour meter but, this is probably because some of the equipment, such as a back-ho, is used primarily in a stationary position. It is definitley a good indicator of wear if used in conjunction with mileage.

yeah boats log wear by the hour.

but that too seems unfair. your still penalized for idleing(above all) though you are atleast fairly rated for highway miles.

As on board computers become more advanced I am sure all sorts off interesting programs will become available.
I imagine one day your car could collect all sorts of data store it, produce reports, and transfer the data.

They already do. Some of today's cars contain the equivilent of the FAA's version of a black box. They can tell at what speed you were travelling when an accident occured, if you hit the breaks, if you were wearing your seatbelt, engine PRM, and all sotrs of other things. I'm actually quite concerned about this though. I can see in the future, any time someone has an accident the police will plug into your "black bow" download the data and instantly determine who's at fault and exactly how fast and what reaction you had at the moment before impact.

Recording hours only records motor use. Recording miles (ON AVERAGE) is a better indicator of distance traveled and therefore for the avg person how much the CAR was used not just how long the engine was running. But I agree, it is not a perfect method but I would argue better than hours when taking into account total vehicle usage.
