Anyone taken sound readings with different brands of tires?

Dcains, ultra performance tires have stiff sidewalls and rigid belts under the tread. All this taut, unbending, uber-firmness means that energy the tires pick up from rumbling over the grainy surface of asphalt is transmitted through the wheels, axels and so forth and into the car’s cabin. Mitigating this somewhat is the soft, dense rubber compound of the tire’s tread, as it will cushion some of the din. As the tread blocks wear down they provide less and less noise isolation.
Also, look at the tread blocks arrayed around the circumference of the tire. Typically the blocks are not all the same width. There will be a wide, a medium and a thinner one, then the pattern will repeat. The difference in size will be subtle, but this pattern helps break up the droning resonance equal sized blocks would make. Again, as the tread wears down the effectiveness of this is reduced.
These are not faults in tire design, they are just god’s way of telling you to stop spending money on useless crap and to start saving up for new tires.

The results of tire noise testing would be worthwhile, but very difficult to compare. Different speed, different gear, different road surface. Comparisons would be invalided. Besides are you interested in scientific tire noise testing where the all the parameters are controlled? Its been done. See Consumer Reports and Tire Rack test results.
