I glanced down to change the radio station, looked up and impacted. The truck I hit had gone into a hard braking situation. I remember seeing lots of blue smoke from his tires just before I hit. The conditions changed quickly and I was not prepared. I didn't post this information earlier out of caution. But now, the insurance has the full police report as well as my description.

Interesting side story: My key ring sheared off a good section of the ignition key, leaving just a nub sticking out. CHP officer told me to try and start it. There was just enough of the key left to try it, the engine turned over but would not start.

After the tow to the storage lot, the tow truck driver and I looked all through the car for my keys. I was concerned because my only house key is on that key ring. We checked everywhere, under the seats, the floor boards, door pockets, hatch area, center compartment, rear compartments (those doors all popped open) and found nothing.

So I went home and called the locksmith who, because of the security type key I had could not help me. I had to break into my house... To keep the cold out I used my drill, some wood screws and an old sleeping bag to cover the window. Then I blocked off that area with a large blanket and that did the trick to keep the living room warm.

A friend suggested that maybe the key ring bounced off the floor board and may have gotten lodged up under the dash board. We had not looked there and it seemed plausible. This morning a friend from work went around the corner to the storage lot to check out the theory. He found my key ring but not under the dash, it was inside the passenger side airbag.... wish I had video of that happening.

So, first thing this morning, the glass guy comes and fixes the window so my house is secure, I got my keys back shortly after that and then insurance called and the car has been moved to their inspection facility.

I been throwing down ibuprofin and water all day, got a massage and took a hot soak in the tub and am feeling mostly back to rights. Most of the lower back soreness is gone, just some left in the back of my neck and upper back.

The truck in the picture is the truck I hit. The tow truck had not yet arrived yet. CHP on the scene mentioned that the liability bar on the truck was bent. I didn't look at it but I expect the law probably requires replacement. The driver spoke no English but somehow worked his way through the interview with CHP. He was not injured.

I plan to get a Hyundai Santa Fe Sport.
THIS DESCRIPTION DELIVERS!!!!!!!! How the eff did the keys get in the airbag??? Wtf????? Mythbusters, man.

I was so impressed with this read aaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllll the way up til the "Hyundai Santa Fe Sport" part.

*pours out a lil for a fallen Z and a loss to the sports car world. I understand life happens and hopefully you get something fun in the future, if that's what you want.

Glad to hear you're feeling more on the up and up.

Reconsidering the Santa Fe, maybe a BMW X3. But my days of driving a small sports car are pretty much done, for now at least.

Parting out has started though it's only going to be the sound system stuff.

One of two amps (other still in the car and will pull on Monday)
Subwoofer
Kenwood head unit w/navi

I didn't want to put your choice down but I hate them.

I replaced my Z with an X5 and love it.

I think your knee hit the key, and launched the broken-off part and the other keys into the airbag.

OP: Those bars on the back of the trailers are called "Mansfield Bars" on account that the lack of one cost actress Jane Mansfield her life back in 1967 when she hit a slow moving rig and it almost took her head off.

Glad you're okay.

Wow, sorry to hear about the accident, but at least you're relatively unhurt.

I didn't get the X3 or the Santa Fe but instead got a 2011 RAV4 base model. 38K miles on it, priced at $17k. I've already joined a RAV4 forum and started the audio build. Just finished pulling all the audio stuff out of the Z yesterday.

Except over paying for it.

OP: I guess as long as you're happy with the deal is all the matters, seems like you over payed to me.

^ I get that but it was in the same price range as the others in it's year and mileage range that I looked at and actually better in many cases. CarMax had one, same price, 48K miles and black, powder coated wheels that they would not swap or clean off.

Side note: The Finance office offered me no less than $9,000 total in add on "protection" options. Everything from a $900 alarm system that was already installed to LoJack, paint and fabric protection, contract cancellation options, maintenance packages, extended warranty, etc.

Won't be putting the car up on CL as I decided not to buy it from the insurance company. Funny because my driver's side handle broke about a month ago.
