Default My 93 RX-7 VS my 350Z

Have had a chance to compare the acceleration of my RX-7 to my Performance 350Z. The 350Z has a very linear type of acceleration as the RPM"s are building. My RX-7 on the other hand has a throw you back in the seat type of acceleration and just keeps on going as the RPM's climb. In my comparision I would have to say the RX-7 would be able to take my Performance Z in the 0-60 time and the quarter mile. If anyone has had an RX-7 Twin turbo they would know what I mean. It is brutal with its acceleration.

C&D tested the RX-7 10 years ago and got 0-60 in 5 seconds flat. 1/4 mile 13.7@101mph. It appears the RX-7 was quicker off the line, but the trap speed at the end of the 1/4 mile were equal so the 350Z could be catching up. So who would win to 150mph? I don't know.

Also if you are familiar with street start (5-60 rolling start) the 350Z is faster than the RX-7 (5.8 vs 6.0sec).

So there you have it. The 350Z is a fast car, but not as fast as the RX-7 turbo.

Sometimes the 0-60 times are alot slower for the rx7 when it doesnt run. Check out this site of this guy who had soooo many problems with this '93 rx7:

That's good information, thanks for posting! I've seen similar comparisons to the 300ZX Turbo, on zhome.com:

The 350Z dyno chart below is from the review on http:\\www.sportcompactcarweb.com. The 300ZX dyno chart includes two key mods: K&N filters in the stock air box and a cat back exhaust made from 2.5 inch mandrel bent tubing and Borla sport turbo mufflers.

Code:
RPM 350Z HP 300zxtt HP 350Z TORQUE 300ZXTT TORQUE
2000 75 60 200 165
3000 130 130 225 230
4000 175 195 230 260
5000 225 240 240 260
6000 244 250 215 220
redline 225 235 175 180
The 350Z redlines at 6500, the 300zx at 7200, with the last line showing redline numbers. Note that the 350Z is brand new, perhaps not completely broken in, but has microfinished crank journals and cam surfaces for lower friction losses and a carbon fiber driveshaft and my 300zxtt has 110k miles with some loss of compression, but with two mods that really open it up and help the engine breathe.

Looks like the 350Z has it all over the 300zx at 2000 rpm with a 15hp and 35 ft-lbs of torque advantage. But as soon as the turbos start to spool up at 3000 rpm, the 300zx has caught up with virtually even hp and torque numbers. Between 4000 and 5000 the twin turbo has a big advantage with 15-20 more hp and 20-30 more lb-ft of torque. By 6000 rpm the two engines are about equal again, but the 300zx will rev 700 rpm higher. The above numbers actually cut off the 300zx torque peak of 272 ft-lbs at 4500 rpm. Remember, these are chassis dyno numbers, so you can divide by 0.85 to account for the estimated 15% losses in the drive train.

I'd say the 300zxtt is much more powerful overall, but gives up something off the line. You'll also have to downshift to tap into the 300zxtt power when cruising, whereas the 350Z will just respond to the pedal for passing.
I'm not sure it's fair, though, to compare a turbo to a NA car. Turbos gain you a lot in raw performace, but they have their downsides.
