Default nissan 350z instant model/trim look up, FOUND/SOLVED!

hey guys, not sure if someone has already stumbled on the ability to do this but I just bought a z and was trying to find out the model, guy advertised it as a "base" model but it did not add up based on what I was reading... come to find out its actually a "track"......... so I started looking direct through Nissan, and the way you can tell is by going directly to Nissans recall website! iv found that if you enter the vin, after it tells you if you have any recalls pending it also tells you the model/trim to the vin of the z you entered...... It worked on mine and I also tried a few tests with cars for sale online that posted there vin and its been right everytime............ if this has already been discovered no harm done, but if not I feel like a lot of people will be trying it!!!!!! heres the link to Nissans recall site, just plug in your vin and find out what model you really have.......................

You was right on the money I checked it out just being curious, good looking out this could be very helpful for pre-purchase Z owners trying to find out exactly what model they have, some salesmen can be very scandalous in misrepresenting the model if you don't know and done some research!!!

Thanks for posting this, it will help a lot of people out, a lot of dealers misrepresent the trims that the z came in.

+ 1 may very well be the best first post I've ever seen. You'll fit right in here OP, welcome to the forum.

EDIT: I was a little curious what my VIN would read so I checked it... It says I have a 2008 35th anniversary edition LOL I have an 08 nismo so this isn't TOTALLY accurate, just so everybody knows...

thanks guys for the positive replies!...... and in regards to the model not being associated with the VIN, your kinda right kinda wrong, if I understand it correctly its all about who you give that number to...... the vin number being ran through a dmv or trying to decode it letter by letter wont do jack to get you the trim of your Z. HOWEVER, if you give that same number to nissan they can use it to look up the exact car that was produced in there registry, and being that they produced the vehicle they have all the specifics on what that vehicle was along with any trim. so there not really using the vin number its self to decode the trim.... there just using it as a reference to look up the specific Z in the registry...

Good link.

I bought my 03 as a base coupe but looking around on different sites and following links, things didn't add up.

I just discovered my 03 is an Enthusiast.

Thanks and welcome to the forum.

yes I did end up buying it, its an 03 track model listed as a base in the ad. the owner was in the army overseas, so it had sat in his garage for the better part of 2 years untouched! he dint have much interest in it anymore and just wanted it gone when I called on it...... im not sure what base price is for one of these but the car looked clean and had some add-ons, borla cat back, k&n intake, he said it had a nismo R-tune?? something about the cam and headers idk he gave me some recipts for it but I havnt taken time to see what that set up was all about. so I handed over 3500 cash and loaded it on the trailer.... sence then Iv bought a battery, some oil and a can of seafoam.......only complaint is the aftermarket headlights! they suck something awful, still working on a good solution to this...

https://my350z.com/forum/vindecoder.php is what I used to decode my vin and it gave a lot of information about the car. 3500 sounds like a pretty good deal on an o3 track.
