Default exhaust question

Hi guys, just got an oil change (only let dealer do it because its required to keep my warranty) and they told me I have a leaky y pipe. It is nismo s tune exhaust. My questions are: does the pipe really need replaced and not just a gasket or clamp issue? It wouldn't surprise me if stealership wanted to hose me. And, if indeed it must be replaced does the nismo y pipe differ greatly in spec from stock? Pictures I have researched look virtually identical and my gf works for Napa and can get me the part for a third of what dealership wants to charge. Its just hit 90k so its time for dif service and sparkplugs too so its a decent chunk of change.

It depends on where the leak is coming from. If it is coming from the flanges it could just need a new gasket and hardware, but if it's coming from the flex pipe or a crack somewhere, then it will need to get replaced.

The nismo exhaust was discontinued and was only sold as an entire system, so the only option if you need to replace it is to find a used one or get another y-pipe. A great alternative is to get the oem HR y pipe. It can be had for around $100 in great condition.

If you are not mechanically challenged I would get under the car and look for myself. If you are unsure snap some pics and post them up so we can help you.

I'd put my money on gaskets, they probably hear a leak and think flex pipe so they charge more money, plus New gaskets.
But it could be the flex pipe if you scrape often...

And I agree about getting the hr y pipe. Much cheaper plus same or even better results. But may also void warranty, that I don't know for sure, but it is technically an OEM part so.. but who knows...

I have unlimited power train warranty as long as all maintenance is done at dealer. What do you think about this?

Will it cause any loss if performance?

If you have an unlimited powertrain warranty then it should be covered. Exhaust is part of the engine and is not a "wear-and-tear" item. I would push them to fix it under warranty.

Sadly the warranty ends after the exhaust manifold. No pipes or other exhaust parts are covered so I am on the hook for this one. I get engine, drive components, internally lubricated parts etc.

Does it say that in your documentation? Or is that just what they're saying now, because they don't want to cover it?

Unfortunately that warranty is sort of bs. I have the same, and the stipulations go that you must be able to prove maintenance performed at regular intervals (they said receipts for oil if you do it your self should be fine), and only covers internal parts I. E. Pistons, rods, cams, rings, crank, gears. A lot of stuff is left out, such as gaskets, clutch, etc.... But that is the stuff that will fail imo. I'm sure the warranty has been used by some before but I'd be willing to bet that it's rare. The warranty only covers the parts that never really wear out if you are taking care of them, and the mods that will allow you to break them will void warranty.

True. Yeah my documentation does not say that exhaust piping is covered so I'm on my own for that. Thoughts on the Napa part? My gf gets it for like 125 so if it won't hinder any gains I get from the rest of the s tune setup then I'm gonna do it

If it does not specifically say where the warranty ends, I say you have grounds to fight for it.

Does anyone know the measurements in that nismo pipe so I can compare?
