Flipped my Z - Need advice on dealing with insurance
Getting on the freeway the other day I lost control and I was unable to recover the slide. I'm not unfamiliar with having this car sideways but I was really caught off guard when this happened. Since I was going off the road I tried to go straight off (safest line right?) but dug a wheel into the ivy and the car took a very slow, very depressing flip onto its roof.
So I've never been in an accident, never dealt with insurance aside from a parking lot scratch.
In my mind a flipped car = totalled but it sounds like sometimes that's not the case. Those of you with more body experience than me can you give any kind of guess on how destroyed this car is? Surprisingly little damage overall aside from the roof.
Assuming the car is totalled, am I hosed on aftermarket parts that I do not have receipts for? When the appraiser comes out how soon will they try to take the car? Will I have the option to keep it for a little bit to replace stock parts instead of my expensive parts if they will not pay me for them?
What steps can I take to make sure I get the most for the car? Not asking for anything illegal, I simply want to know more about the process going into it because I know insurance companies goal is to pay me as little as possible after me paying them 100+ bucks a month for my entire adult life.

I'm no expert on what totals a Z, but if it is, I would assume you could strip your undamaged aftermarket parts off if you aren't sure if you have the receipts for them.
You'll most likely have to buy it back from insurance to grab any parts off of it at this point.
You might be able to negotiate additional compensation for aftermarket parts if you can prove they were on the car, depending on your insurance provider. But once insurance cashes you out for the car, they own it.
If aftermarket parts cost more than what the oem parts would cost then you should be able to get money. EX OEM rims cost 3k(no idea just making an example) aftermarket rims 2.5k no extra money given to you.
I'm sure you were taking the on-ramp at posted speed limit too
While I'm no insurance expert, my guess is your Z isn't a total. If it is, they usually give you a few days to take parts off and replace them with OEM. Depends on the company. My best advise is to be straightforward and honest with the appraiser and be prepared to pay a lot more on your premium. Did you get any citation for the accident?
I don't know how fast I was or wasn't going, but I'll say this, I've definitely caught skids going at least double that speed in controlled environments off public roads. Truly embarrassing that this happened the way it did. I was not going nearly fast enough to expect to lose control, and I hate to pass off blame but I will say that I believe ghosts to have been involved.
No citation given, police report filed but I haven't seen it yet.
Insurance will not pay for aftermarket parts. plain and simple unless you documented with the insurance company before hand. your premium would have skyrocketed if you did this. The pay out will be fair market value of the car. go to KBB and get the public party sale estimator.
the insurance DOES NOT CARE for your loyalty or anything else. they are a business and like a business they will pay you the least amount possible. which business do you know that hands out extra money for free.
that car looks crazy upside down. good thing ur ok, it seems..You'd get nothing for aftermarket parts unless you had them stated on your premium which would be way higher than $100 a month. Buy the car back after it's totaled to remove parts to sell or do it quickly before they offer you a settlement

Having seen a few mangled Zs both on and off the track, sometimes it's just catching a wheel at the wrong angle that results in the dreaded "slow roll". As for blame, look in the mirror. If you see dead people or ghosts standing behind you, maybe you do have bigger problems. In any case, the Z gave it's all to protect you from serious injury during this shunt...
Best advice would be take the parts off. Get it to your house or a shop you know and get them off before the appraiser comes out. I got screwed on my aftermarket bike parts in a motorcycle accident last year. They font give you enough back to compensate what its worth. Sorry to hear about the Z bro. Ex. I had $300 stator cover on my bike only a month old. They gave me $128 for it...
At least you're ok(no injuries mentioned), other than being embarrassed and some hurt pride. Could've been a lot more expensive of an accident, as in you could've paid with yours or someone else's life.
Like previously mentioned, your Z gave her all in protecting you. But also like previously mentioned, doesn't sound like the full story is being told.
Keep in mind this is a 'social media' site, and insurance or whoever else can get on here and see your posts, etc. Probably in your best interest to not post up the full story, at least not until after everything is said and done.
If you have the car as of now, pull your aftermarket and replace with stock oem parts...any and all that wouldn't be taken into account for the flip. You did post up those pics, so it is evident to some extent which aftermarket parts, and you did mention police report was filed, so probably pics taken for that too.
If you do pull/replace with oem, and anyone asks why the car looks different than in pics or anything similar, just explain what you did and why...you pulled your aftermarket because you figured you wouldn't get compensated...and that you didn't know you weren't supposed to. It is still your car (at least for now), and you have the right to change whatever you want. Street legality is pretty much a moot point as of now, I really don't think you're going to be driving her in her current condition.
Really doubt anyone would care as long as the parts pulled weren't the cause of the wreck (if aftermarket camber arm snapped...leave it/why would you want to pull it).
I dont think you will get in any "trouble" for swapping the aftermarket parts with the OEM parts. Your current coverage covers the car with the OEM parts on it (unless you added the aftermarket parts to your coverage). So why not let the insurance company take what they insured? Like others said, you need to do this before they give you the check, if it is totaled. Once they hand you that check, they own it, so you could face some issues swapping parts after that is done.
Above all else, glad to see you are okay and no one else was hurt in this accident.
Best of luck with the insurance company.
think there is more to the story then he is telling, i have never flipped any car just getting on the freeway
Yeah, I mean as far as a forum post goes, no way to convince anyone that I wasn't being reckless. I'm the first to admit if I was being stupid, I really wish I was drifting it or really flying because I wouldn't feel like this was so unfair. I didn't get a picture of the skid marks but they show the car was corrected and going straight going into the ivy. Those of you that track your cars know that this is usually a safe bet when you have to go off.
I can confidently say that after maybe 15-20 track days and teaching skid recovery on a skidpad for about a year in college that there's no reason I shouldn't have been able to catch this, the fact that it flipped was a freak accident after burying a wheel in the ivy.
I may have some theories but really until the insurance has been handled I don't want my wild theories possibly being brought into the equation. I stand by ghosts for now.
I appreciate everyone's kind words though and I'm extremely glad nobody was hurt.
I'm genuinely sad that this car will not be able to continue its corvette domination (both of my best friends run c5's, 1 frc 1 z06). I had just gotten the car exactly how I wanted it and had only one track day with it running perfectly. Just dropped in the new radiator and fresh oil, she was ready for big willow this weekend. Here's a quick pic at laguna seca and one from chuckwalla for old times sake. RIP baby.
