Default Motor oil claims

for years now marketing company's have made outlandish claims. Some of you might remember Castrol 20/50 engineered for smaller higher reving motors. The end to thermal break down. Today at the Shop the service manager claimed The oil used in my daily was good for 10,000 miles. I'm going to throw a BS flag! In all actuality I'm sure the synthetic oil can go that long. The problem with this kind of marketing is the very fine print. Not many people want to change only the filter at regular intervals.

It's no surprise motor oil companies try to outdo each other in marketing claims. It's a competitive market and each company has to come up with an angle to separate themselves from the pack. As for keeping the oil in your Z for 10K, just ask him what HE drives and what he's doing with his own ride...

With the basic understanding that motor oil suspends and floats contaminants to a filter where they're trapped. I wish I had a better understanding of what makes one oil filter better or worse. I've never seen any real data just heard opinions.

There was a short discussion over what makes a good oil filter in the UOA thread in the engine/drivetrain section. Resolute did this board a huge favor by assembling UOAs on VQs for our consideration. It's worth reading, if you haven't already.

I'm right around 3000 miles on my z if I could actually put 3000 miles on the car...

I run between 8,000 and 9,000 in my pickup because I send an oil sample to Blackstone every change and they provided me with how much detergent is in my oil sample...I drive pretty conservatively and I use about 1/2 extra quart of oil per change...

Your shop foreman may be right...
