Default Laser trap in a 25 mph zone? What a waste!

I got hit by laser (as evidenced by the air-raid siren that my V1 put off when it happened) in a 25 mph zone on the University of Colorado campus this morning. I was just driving along minding my own business (doing the speed limit, fortunately,) when my V1 suddenly lit off with the laser warning. I looked up the road, and sure enough there was a police Suburban sitting in a parking lot just off the main road with a laser device pointed right at me. I cruised on by and noticed him in my mirror pulling out to stop a yellow Saturn that had been about a quarter-mile back, not going much faster than me.

It seems like a bit of a waste for a cop to set up a laser trap at 9 AM on a Sunday morning in a 25 mph zone. I've always thought of laser as being used to catch people doing 120+ on the Interstate, not 32 in a 25. Weird.

The cops here at the University of Florida do that all the time. Our campus limit is 20mph. I don't even think about breaking it.

They do that a lot here in LA, Cali. They will purposely tear the street up, so they can post the 25 mph construction signs and then they wait and pull cars over going the normal speed limit. When i say purposely, it really seems like that because the next week they are on a different street same neighborhood doing the same thing.

i'm with nismokid... won't do anything over 20 mph on UF campus. the cops are nuts with pulling people over here, even if they're on a bicycle!

btw nismokid, are you the lemans sunset that lives on 23rd in the same place as the new maxima and the srt4?

Not me, my friend lives in that complex (the same one with a silver '94 TT Supra, 240SX, too). I'm just off of Old Archer Road. I haven't seen a Track Z in Gainesville yet, but quite a few Tourings. My friend got pulled over on his bike for not having a light, LOL!!!

They do that up here too. A small back road with a 25 MPH limit. But this road has a "Strictly Enforced" sign.

It is a waste, but he did catch one didn't he?

do you think the V1 warning signal would have given you enough time to slow down if you were doing say...45mph?

I dunno how much radar guns cost, but wouldn't it just be easier/simpler for the PD to just get laser guns as opposed to a few laser and a few Ka? Besides, CUPD is rich.

BTW, which street were you going down? Euclid?

Not with laser…that’s pretty much one well-focused shot and you’re dead. Laser doesn’t radiate like radar does, so you don’t get advance warning when it’s being used in the area.

I'm not sure of the street name. It's the first campus road that turns to the right off of Broadway as you're going north. The street passes a park on the left and then bends to the left as it winds past the basketball arena. The cop was sitting in the parking lot that's just beyond the arena.

Laser may not radiate, but it does scatter. Moisture and other particles in the atmosphere scatter the beam significantly. I have picked up laser like this many times.

They shoot at someone ahead of me, my detector goes off, I slow down, then they shoot at me. Then I grin.

It is true, if the first shot is at you, then you are probably busted. But you can see laser in use if they shoot at people ahead of you before they shoot at you.
