resale----I was right! Good info.
last year when I gave up my bmw 3 series for a z, I got harassed by many friends and family members (8bmw owners in total) for buying a car that would supposedly have horrible resale. I kept on telling them that I spoke to a Actuarial Scientist that told me the Z would have better resale than a BMW.
Well he was right, this is why no one is asking me how I like the z and if I regret buying it.

Wow, now that's consolence! I already went into this purchase knowing that the car would not be worth much after a few years... but it's cool to hear that this is not the case. So far.
hmmm... i thought the total opposite when i bought mine. generally solid sports cars, with fairly low production numbers, especially a brand new import with heritage would certainly command a higher resale value than lets say a mustang or an fbody. I mean dont supras, 300zx's, and the like ahve a pretty decent resale value even now, compared with other cars that were in their price range?
Good news.
Funny thing is I just got my excise taxes and they valued the car at $15k (vs. $24.5k trade-in value at the MSN website). Now I know they always value your car extremely low, which is also good for thr pocket, but does anyone know how they actually value a car for the excise tax?

BMW(and most other Euro Cars) are nice to buy when brand new because of the "PrePay service". Where U don't have to pay a penny, while your under warranty, for service. But the costs are already incorporated in the buying price. But when u do run out of warranty, that's when the nightmare begins. Highly overpriced oil changes, services and repairs(We had to pay $300 for a battery replacement for out BMW X5).
I would never buy a used BMW because of this.
I think japanese cars are the best for resale value.
Integra Type R still cost around 18-20K, and the SI(b16) still cost around 14-16K.
I think the Toyota Supra TT 6mt is the best example of good resale value

I could only hope.
Not that I want to sell my baby.

yeah, the camparison is slightly flawed but in a different way I think. supra and teg-R were very low production and highly demanded. however a last year of either with low miles and stock will go for what it cost brand new, even being 4-6years old. check the classified and I bet youll find(if any are available) a 98 supra for 40k.
the Z will not do that, no way. but I look around, people are selling my car, which cost 34000 for 29995 right now. 4000$ in a year aint bad at all. your sposed to lose like 4500 the minute you drive off the lot if you follow the 15% rule.

I forgot to mention that I thinking about the Track model and 6mt/navigation models.
Aren't these low-production?
Maybe if they use the Z as the "star" car in the next Fast and Furious.............

Then we get a whole bunch of Z's with fat wings and bad paint jobs... almost enough to want me to sell mine...
I think it was ares that made a good point before... the Z is too expensive for the young F&F fanboys... but in time (years) as prices come down and concurrent affordability matches ~15K price ranges, we'll see a bunch youngsters driving Z's. But not for now.

For what it's worth, I had listed both of my vehicles ('98 Honda Accord EX V6 Coupe and my '03 Performance DB 6MT Z) in the autotrader, and the best offer I got on the Z was $24k! I was flabbergasted, so needless to say I am keeping the Z!
30,000 a year or so. not particularly low if you compare them to S2k numbers of 5000 or so. corvette has about 30k a year.
supra only had a few thousand TT models, same for the 300ZX. overall they were the same production give or take, but much lower performance on most of them.

From what I've read the Z shows that it will have good resale. From real-world experience, I dont know. I paid $25,800 for my 03 touring with just 14k on it, new tires, aero package and everything else but nav FROM a dealer. Granted it was thanksgiving in MA so its not the most popular time to buy a sportscar, but that seems awfully low. In the 8 months my car was owned previously, it dropped about 9k.
Although eBay isnt always correct, there are mass amounts or Tourings going for 25ish, although reserve is commonly not met.
Hoping the resale is correct, I should still be able to sell it for what I paid a year or so down the road.

Actually eBay is a good predicator as to the current value of cars, as the 'value' is what determines pricing. That is "demand." If there are 100 buyers that see the value of your (used) car in the 25K range and the BB states 30K, the 30K has no basis as "demand" only values the car in the 25K range. In that case, the prospective 100 buyers will not pay the extra 5G because it is out of their price range, thus 'value' pricing comes down. Now if you find a deal below what demand deems, you have found one of those rare, good finds.
Very highly unlikely, but I hope so too (for my sake).

Yes, that is logical, but I dont think eBay is right on for the value. MOST would be buying sight unseen. Now if your car is flawless, and your buyers hear it/see it before making an offer, I would only think that would pull a higher price. I for one would never pay a cars full "BB" value without seeing and driving it, and I think many are the same. Pictures hardly show details.

i would spend $300000 at a dealer, but would never spend more than $100 on ebay. The people who bid on cars on ebay are trying to get a STEAL. PLUS if you want to bid over 10000$ on ebay you have to go through a bunch of hoops, the ebay items even state to contact the dealership or seller to negotiate a price...
ebay is flawed...I paid 26500 for this car...ebayers think I paid 28500. Basically, I saw the car on ebay, went to the dealer and negotiated a price, and bought the car after thoroughly checking it out. Then the dealer asked me to 'buy it now' and give feedback as not to upset the low-ballers that were considering placing a bid.

Um... you realize that you are looking at residual value. This benefits leasees more resellers. Resellers go of what the book is on that day. Leases go off an assumed value at the end of a set period of time.
This is a good thing for leasers, could lean either way for buyers.
Also, the article is for the 04s...
