Requests for maintenance and repair help account for about 90 percent of what gets posted on the 2003-2009 Nissan 350Z sub-forum now.

 

It's the forum of no common sense, no basic diagnostic skills, and no searching before asking the most basic questions.

 

I knew it served SOME purpose. It just kind of defeats the utility of using a forum search.

 

the new generation of owners want to be spoonfed. heaven forbid they get dirty or do basic troubleshooting

 

I did my basic troubleshooting before I made any of my recent posts

I think it's just the 350Z is now at the age where repair and maintenance is much more common than upgrading...

 

looks at join date, nope... not new generation. with you, and most senior members here you do basic common sense things and then come on here to see if anyone similar had issues. your posts are well put together, not something like

"my car vibrates, what could it be?

03 350z (like they need to tell us the car) with pop charger and 120k miles"

 

LOL Trav. Most newb help threads don't bother to include year, mileage, mod lists or anything that might be useful to send them in the right direction.

Also, you're right about people just showing up out of nowhere and their first post is, "I've been lurking forever/just bought my first Z and now I have a problem..." If you were lurking, it would have been nice if you said hello first in the New Owners forum.

Maybe this discussion should have gone in the "declining expectations" thread. Ahh well, I guess all vehicle-specific websites get to this point eventually. Anyway, I'm still here and still like you guys. Even you, Travis. ::HUGZ::

 

People have been making 'newb help threads' since the very beginning. What you're seeing is a decrease in quality of new threads from the non-newbs. All the real enthusiasts, diy'ers, and professional shop accounts have all stopped posting. What you have left are vendors and people that like to kill time on this forum.

 

What other kind of forums does everyone here post on ? I can tell you that I'm a professional musician and college level music teacher and I see newbie posts ALL the time on some of the forums I frequent

I get the same frustration at the basic questions without using search mode, but it is what it is. Also, I know you guys are just venting a little so it's cool :-)

Us new guys who don't have a tremendous amount of diagnotic skills appreciate it tho. So thank you :-)

It took me about three hours of manually worming my way through their directories to figure that one out.

I notice exactly what you mention. This has been going on for some time. I hesitated pointing this out and am glad someone else came forward.

The 350z Tech area has a “Maintenance & Repair” sub-forum, which is the appropriate place for all the repair help threads we see posted here (the “2003-2009 Nissan 350z” sub-forum).

In the past the Mods moved inappropriate threads out of this sub-forum and into the appropriate places.

 

Hmmm, before I posted my link, I tried a random download and got the cruise control (ACS) chapter with no issues. I've had all of them on my harddrive for several years now, but don't recall if I used that same source, or not. Glad they're still available, though, for those who don't have them.

 

my350z.com has so much help, tips, and knowledge on this site.
if you simply can't find what your troubleshooting here, then you're in the wrong site.
the 350z has got to that age where everybody has expirenced at least the same problem or issue that you have. or even a build you want to do, it's been done and shared here.

what grinds my gears are the certain questions the new generation asked that they can self diagnose in their own driveway. (ask your question) and input my350z into google.
"example: how to install a catch can site:my350z"

Use the operand people, Google is mature technology so why are people afraid to use it correctly?

 

It would be easy to say younger owners don't know how to do homework. If you think about how the Auto repair world has changed, you'd be amazed.

When I was coming up and needed help, there was no Internet or forums, I had to go buy a Chilton's at NAPA to learn how to do my Mitsu head gaskets. Learn everything on the fly.

Today every kind of information about anything is a search away. Young folks don't like to waste time anymore than me, and their culture dictates, "Ask a question!", get an answer.

Yes, it's interesting to watch. I'm getting ready to put on front camber-arms and my go-to is my350z.com and Youtube.

Appreciate it for what it is, or what us older folks didn't have! If you don't have anything positive to say/help, leave it alone and don't p1ss folks off simply bc you've been there. No one is being served by that!

The worst part is when they ask a question and expect an answer, and then they don't even have the know how to do it themselves.

If you're asking a dumb question, chances are you won't be able to fix it yourself anyways

 

Generally that's the first step into learning something new. I don't know a whole lot, and I'm learning on the way. So if I know where a problem is occurring, I can ask specific question pertaining to the problem; Then look into it more on my own. If I get stuck along the way, research, and ask some more.

Asking "dumb questions", is the first step in the right direction. It's wrong if you just take **** apart and make things worse, when it can be done the right way the first time.
