Default To Z or not to Z....Please help!

OK...here's the deal. Have a Performance Silverstone on order...was told it would be here Sept. 15th when ordered...latest is that I may see it Nov. 2nd (how much stock I'm putting on that is questionable). The big question I need help on is whether I should cancel my order or not. See, I live in WI, so I'd be getting it just in time to store the damn thing! Why should I make payments on a sports car sitting in storage for 6 months? In addition to having other financial concerns right now, I still want the car, but am wondering if I let my preorder go...will I still get MSRP on another order? OR, even more importantly, will there be some leverage if I wait until Spring and locate one available and maybe even get it closer to the invoice of $28,363 than the MSRP of $31,176? I'm thinking I have little to loose by waiting because I'm hearing of others getting cars at MSRP without preorders. My logic is that the demand is highest now...and it would be unlikely that if I were to wait, I wouldn't be able to do as well...if not better on price. Additionally, when it comes to resale...I know my current vehicle is a "2003", but if I locate one in Spring it may very well have a later manufacture (specific) date which would likely make it more desireable....right?

Sick of waiting...just to make payments on a vehicle I can only say I have sitting in my garage. Walking past it all Winter long would be torture!

I'd get the car unless it'll strain your finances. No car is worth it if it'll put you up to your neck in debt. If finances are questionable
maybe wait a few years and pick up a used one - otherwise this car is worth it even if you can only drive it 7 days a month - it's that good.

OK Bill T,

You're saying buy it if you can afford it...it's well worth it, but what about buying it in Spring instead of sitting on it for the next six months?

Don't you have snow plows there? If you truly can't drive it for x months then you might back out of the first deal and reorder but if you can drive at least several days out of the month I'd go ahead. It kind of depends on where you live and how fast the streets are cleared. Also, make sure you can reorder at MSRP.
These cars are hot sellers now and likely to remain that way at least for the next 6 months. This is a great car - whenever you get one you'll love it. It's a little hard for me to picture 10 ft snow drifts when here in Va. we get only 4 to 8 inches and it's gone in 3 days.

Default Buy later...

I don't think I'd be able to purchase the car and allow it to sit for 6 months. That would just kill me. I'd much rather buy it and drive it for six month. I guess living in Texas has its advantages. I have a motor cycle and can ride it year round here. That must be hard on ya man.

As for Nissan keeping their word about arrival dates, I wouldn't put money on it showing up when they say it will. They'll probably push that date out again which would mean even more snow for you up there. Best thing to do is just purchase it later. I'm sure you'll still be able to buy one at MSRP later. Not all dealerships are out to take advantage of ya. Just do a search and you'll find one in a city or state close by. I'm sure you'll do what's best for you... Good luck man.

IMHO, I say wait. There really is no point in buying a car and then have it sit in the garage while paying for it as it depreciates.

My guess is 6 months from now, it will get cheaper as the demand decreases. After all, the market for a 2 seater sports car is only so big.

Cash is King and I don't see a good reason to part with it unless you can derive the enjoyment immediately.

My 2 cents.....

Wait. If you aren't going to drive it anyway, just get one later. The worst you will have to pay is msrp and may even get a price break, if you are willing to travel for it. Don't cancel your order, though, just wait until it comes in, just in case its early or you have a really mild winter.

All good feedback...I'm swaying toward waiting till Spring. Just to give a little more feedback: Yeah, 45 days (or more depending on actual delivery date) makes all the difference in the world. This is going to be my "Sunday driver only"...in other words, I have no intention of letting her ever see the salt on the roads (even if the snow is cleared) If you stop to truly think about it...if I had gotten it delivered when they originally said it would be delivered (Sept. 15th) A) I'd have it already and would be able to drive it for nearly 3 months before the snow flies and the salt comes. B) I'd get the excitement/thrill the rest of you are currently enjoying by being one of the first in the area to have a machine that makes others drool. C)I'd have it completely broken in the right way...waiting to break out on the first nice day and clear conditions in Spring.
Losing all this, and paying to have it sit in storage just doesn't make sense to me anymore....sure I can say I own it...but then I might as well just live with the desktop pic I have...it cost me nothing!
Who knows the current approx. wait time if I were to reorder? Say I did so around early Nov. when I know how things are truely going to shake out? I wouldn't want to time it wrong and have to take delivery before the roads are clear...call me ****. Last...could some of you give me more feedback on the plus vs. minus of ordering again as opposed to just doing a search come Spring? Thnks.

Thumbs up in the same boat - but going to get it anyhow

hey driven - I know your pain.

I actually posted a similar topic a month or so ago. I live in Chicago (could you guess by my handle?) and I was wrestling with to buy or not to buy.

I decided (for now) to go ahead and get it.

1) I know I'm getting MSRP
2) I am getting only the options I want, the color I want
3) It is NOT going to be 6 months (then again I don’t know how far north you really are). The last two winters in Chicago were relatively mild and in fact did not get real snow until late Jan- Feb. The way I see it, there will probably be 2 solid months where I can NOT drive it and maybe another 2 where I will not get to drive it as often as I would like.

I guess I don’t think it will be that bad. My friend got his boxter delivered in November a couple years ago and he drove it tons during the winter. He also washed it quite often during that time.

I don't think I'm going to be able to not enjoy this car during those occasional crisp clear sunny winter days.

That is why I got heated seats

I hear you Chicago Z...,
There is more to the picture than posted however..., in addition to buying a secondary car just for fun, I am breaking ground on a new home next Spring. I'm looking forward to it, but as with everything else...I'm sure I'll spend tons more than I originally anticipated. This is where I figure I may be best off getting approved and locked for a loan for the house without the additional damage to my debt/income ratio of the car. When it is locked...I'll have no trouble getting a loan for the car...but don't want the reverse order to screw me up. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't matter, but is another consideration for me. The biggest thing is the fact that as I mentioned, I don't intend to drive it at all except on great days.
I know no one can make the decision for me, but right now after discussing in depth with my wife...the house is taking presidence. Don't worry...I'll still get my Z! I just won't have to be heartbroken everytime I walk past her in the morning until Spring! Now I just have to find someone interested in the clear bra I bought from Krinkov. If anyone is interested, I'll sell it for the same great price Krinkov sold it to me for (before he had to pull the plug)...$275...and I'll pay for the shipping.
Thanks all for your feedback.

Scanman,

You may have an easy out...if the actual delivery date of the vehicle is more than 15 days beyond the anticipated delivery date printed on your contract...bingo...you can legally bow out...with every right to get your full refund! That is if your contract reads like mine....I suppose your contract could very easily read differently than mine.....hope your in luck. I'm still going back and forth on my decision...guess the only good thing about having to wait is that I don't need to decide yet!

You put money down...say you can't get out of it...and DON'T have a contract??? Dude, if you can even prove you gave them any cash at all...go get your friggin money back! They've got no way to hold you to anything!
Am I missing something?

The only thing I have that may resemble a contract is an agreement by them that if the car is unavailble or damaged, then I get my money back.

Nothing states a delivery date, or promisis to deliver on time.

However, I want the car, even if its winter I can still drive it at times. Its not going to be my daiely driver anyway.

A little "off topic", but I thought I would offer a little friendly advice from somone that's in the mortgage business, just so you don't get yourself in trouble.

Because you are "locked" (I am assuming you are refering to "locking in" your interest rate and guarantying that rate at the closing) this does not guarantee that you'll always be "approved" for the loan through the closing date of the loan. Normally when you apply for a mortgage your credit is pulled at the beginning of the process. However, it is not unusual for your credit to be "repulled" prior to the drawing up of the closing papers, just for this reason (ie any new debts). If a new debt shows up on your new credit report then you will have to qualify with that new debt.

As you had stated, it probably "won't matter", however to be safe, why not run the "potential" new debt by the person taking your mortgage? They're not going to say "Well, just because you're thinking of buying a new car, I'm going to have to obligate you for that debt now"! If they say it doesn't matter then you're fine. If they say it does matter then wait until the day after you close to get the new loan, just to be safe. This actually happens quite frequently and have had a couple of people that ended up shooting themselves in the foot. If I misunderstood you, sorry. Again, just trying to give some friendly advice.

Anyonetou,
Good advise...I think we'll be getting the numbers run both ways now before we obligate ourselves. May just be the answer I was looking for...I don't really need to bust myself up about the "buy or not" question if the loan company decides for me.

thnx
