Default Clutch problem

So I have a 2003 6 speed 350z and I had been driving on the highway for a couple hours. I went to press the clutch in when I got off the exit and the first half of the throw of the clutch pedal was soft with no resistance and then the last half had pressure. The clutch still disengaged and I could still shift gears, but the clutch pedal felt different. I go to release it and it seems the clutch engages sooner and farther down than it used to be before I got on the highway. Also after the throw come back to halfway, the clutch pedal springs upward to its normal position but again the first half of the pedal throw has no to very little resistance. Also my 350z has 83000 miles on it

^ Both +1.. From what you described it sounds like there could be air in the system. Check the system to make sure all your fittings are tight, then try bleeding it and see if that helps.

The clutch does not slip, I’ve tried the method of putting it in 5th gear and flooring it and both the rpms and speed rise at equal amounts. What would be the symptoms of a failed slave cylinder? And I’ll give bleeding the system a try when I get off work

My guess is the master. It’s been covered plenty in the past.

I had same symptoms. Went with the wilwood upgrade from zspeed.

My clutch pedal is returning though so I don’t think the Master Cylinder is bad, not saying it isn’t. I think I’m going to look at replacing the Slave cylinder and bleeding the system first

I have always believed in replacing both at the same time

Agreed. If you're replacing the slave and bleeding the system (which can be a pain if you don't follow the procedure in the FSM), might as well do the master while you're at it. If you get the master cylinder upgrade from zspeed, you can bleed it the conventional way and not do the "pedal dance."

If you're still using the OEM clutch pedal, there's a very strong return spring built into it. So just because the pedal returns, doesn't mean the hydraulics are solid. If you have an 03-06 Z, it should be a straight forward process to check the slave cylinder and replace as needed. The same goes for the master cylinder.

I would recommend refreshing both master, slave, and the soft-line tube to the slave cylinder. The OEM parts are fairly cheap, but it doesn't hurt to upgrade to beefier aftermarket kit.
