New owner of a 2003 z. It is a wrecked car with salvage title that will be used in a 24 enurance race in Sept. I bought the car site unseen. When delivered from insurance co. the clutch was slipping.

Bought clutch max stage two clutch for it online.

Mechanic goes to put in and says the oem clutch is a dual mast and the (supposedly) direct replacement is a single mast.

it appears that the flywheel/starter depth is different, and all the parts are ever so slightly different.

Is there some sort of conversion kit, spacers or something we are missing here. Or has anyone ran into a similar issue

Any help would be greatly appreciated

What’s a dual mast? A stock flywheel is heavier to absorb shock and noise. The mechanic is referring to a dual mass flywheel. I don’t think there is any conversion kit for it to act like oem if that’s what you’re even asking with mast.

 

Yes your correct, dual mast flywheel. (Not clutch)
But regardless if bolted up directly to crank shaft it puts the flywheel teeth appx 3/8” further from starter gear.

 

Not needing it to act like a oem one. Just need to figure out why it appears that flywheel teeth are going to be so much further out. U can see in the pictures that the new on places flywheel teeth further away from starter

 

What brand and model did you specifically buy? Perhaps you got the wrong one for your specific year or it's a defective part. Your best bet is to get in touch with the manufacturer and ask them about the depth difference. I checked out the "Clutch Max" website and I don't even see a valid clutch kit offered by them for the 350Z, where did you get this kit? Also, the prices are ridiculously low for clutch and flywheel combos, I have a hard time believing you're getting a "quality" product at the end of the day.

The teeth on the flywheel are actually going to be "closer" to the starter, not further out. Since you purchased a combo kit that also includes the clutch plate and pressure plate, I don't see why this wouldn't work. I did some searching and found this same kit on Ebay. Although I've never heard of "Clutch America" or "Clutch Max" , I don't see why this wouldn't work. To be double sure though, I would still give the manufacturer a call to verify the differences you and your mechanic noticed are normal.

tbo i dont have real high expectations for the clutch. Pretty much need it for 1 race, 24 hrs probably 1200 miles in 3 or fourth gear then the car will be parted out. Last years winner averaged 49 mph for 24 hrs straight.

Yeah, it should work. As the seller stated you need to use their clutch/pressure plate in combo with their flywheel. This is not all that uncommon. I'm actually using a lightened single-mass flywheel based on the 300ZX-TT dimensions, machined to bolt up to a 350Z/VQ35DE crank, but uses a 300ZX-TT Clutch Disc and Pressure plate. If I were to purchase a clutch kit designed for the 350Z, it wouldn't mate up properly with the flywheel I have. Something I was well aware of when making the purchase.
