Question To Buy or not: 225 TT v 350z

Hi Guys

I'm currently driving a 225 Audi TT and am considering a 350z

Has anyone made this transition? And what are your comments? Also any members from NE England on this forum?

Cheers

Paul

a few members here have made the transition (not too many the other way around though) - I'm sure they will chime in.

if not the Z for dear lord, atleast swap up to the new V6.

it depends what your needs are, interior quality, audi.

everything else important to a sports car, Z.

I had the 180 HP 2001 TT coupe and got a touring Z. Id imagine the 225 handles marginally better and was faster than my 180 but the Z blew my car away in terms of driving.

Cons: Interior can't compare
Doesn't feel as solidly built
Much much more road noise
Seats not as comfortable
Get way too many looks from people in Civics and Integras thinking your looking for a race (I get it at least)
Much less practical

Pros: Definetly feels sportier--much much faster obviously
More interior space
Looks faster
More things available to customize, which I like

I don't know what else. I loved my TT and would definetly switch to V6 one now if I could. I definetly love my Z and enjoy it everytime I go and just blast around and hear the engine.

Cheers Guys.

Some good and fair points made. It is the interior finish that I am not sure about. Love the look and imagine the performance will be much better.

Got a test drive booked in a couple of weeks so will make a more informed decision after that.

Continued comparisons would be welcome.

Cheers

I have never driven a tt but I would imagine that it cost a bit more for the audi right? If so, take that extra money and get the TT for the z and I promise you ... you will be very happy.

He already has the TT. My audi was way better build quality and interior, but the Z is a blast, and repairs are nothing.

The interior of the TT is a work of art. There is no comparison to the Z's interior...it's the interior the Z SHOULD have had..the exterior for me leaves something to be desired however. I've never been a fan of the squashed bug look of the TT...the fuel door...lights...etc.. The Z should be more reliable than any audi, and the residual values for both vehicles reflect that...the Z will have better resale value. They will probably redesign the TT within a year or so also so keep that in mind.

Cheers again

I agree with the majority of your thoughts:

Audi V6 about £5000 ($8000) more than Z

New Audi probably on its way so residuals may be dropping

Do prefer the Z exterior shape

Definately need a good look at the Z and a drive.

Cheers

I have had a chance to drive the 225hp TT as my friend works at the dealership, and I must say I wasn't impressed, and even somewhat disappointed in the performance. The new VR6 model will offer much more torque and overall performace, but I feel the look is now dated and if you want a new car just for the sake of change, the Z is a nice choice.

That being said there are a ton of upgrade possible for the 1.8T, however looking toward the future the 1.8T is being phased out for the 2.0FSI engine that will be found in VW's upcoming MKV's.

Do you have the Coupe or Roadster BTW? I drove the roadster and I did enjoy driving with the top down.

TTs are pretty cool.

Why not just upgrade your motor? You've got everything you need. Turbo and AWD

Just get a chip and some bolt ons. Maybe a turbo upgrade kit.

to add my $0.02
my best friend has a black on black 225 TT (obviously manual and quattro) and i have a liquid aluminum 350 touring...

interior: Audi
Xenons: Audi
Bose: Audi
Smoother as a daily driver: Audi
Easier to drive(clutch and shifting): Audi
Main advantage: Quattro

Turns more heads: Z
More fun: Z
Better steering response: Z
Better feel on the road: Z
More power: Z

Overall the Z feels as streetable as say a mid to late 90's porsche 911...the stiffness in the clutch, the power in the shifter, the potential to tear up the pavement, the overall raw, race-car feel

The TT, although a nice car, lacks the raw horsepower-race car feel. The shifter is much smoother and the cluch much lighter in feedback. The audi is extremely easy to drive and thus makes it a little more ideal if you will spend most of your time going slow and hitting stop signs.....The Z will take a little more time to master but the practice and patience will definately have a Kool-Aid smile on your face

The thrill of the Z is definately worth the $ and time learning the car....something I can't say for the TT

Default TT vs Z

Good friend here has TT 225hp Quattro...I've driven it over 200 miles (from Houston to Austin and back)...was not impressed.

1) The interior quality definitely ups the Z, but I really don't find the interior groundbreaking. It's too monotonous and black for me...and the aluminum contrasting trim is just old...every car has it now - even accords. That said, I can see how it used to be groundbreaking. I think the Z's design is much more fresh and appealing, if executed with significantly cheaper materials. I'd say the Audi still wins though.

2) Build quality - someone said they thought the audi was solid. The coupe I drove didn't seem that solid to me...the structure was quivering over large bumps. Its suspension was soft, so the ride was less jarring than the Z. I'd say this one is a tie.

3) Powertrain - Audi dropped the ball here. The motor was coarse and thrashy, car felt underpowered. The clutch was light. Z decimates the Audi here.

4) Handling - Poor steering feedback, handles like a much cheaper car. Z wins hands down for me.

How's that for a review?

Cheers again guys,

Some excellent comparisons, fully agree with all of your comments about the TT, mine is a coupe btw.

Looking forward to the test drive, I'll post my opinions then

Cheers

Paul
