Default Exhaust Set Up!

If I missed a similar thread on this topic please lmk and if so, my apologies.

07' 350z (MT) planning to stay NA. Id like to upgrade the exhaust system focusing on effectiveness, performance gain, and sound quality.

Currently no power-mods installed. I'd like to start with the exhaust and get as much performance as possible w/out sacrificing the areas I listed above. Note, avoiding excessive drone if/as much as possible. Also, I don't want any emissions headaches.

As for my drive-style, I push the car around back roads (within reason nothing crazy), attend 2-3 light track days a year. Lastly, a handful of 3-hour road trips year-round.

I'm curious what others with exhaust experience/knowledge have to offer around set-up and TUNE suggestions... If you don't have a suggestion that's fine, welcome to share your exhaust/tune set up!

P.S located in CT, if you have performance shop suggestions, fire away!!

Thanks so much -

Borla. It's what I had. Only exhaust I've heard on a Z that didn't make it sound like a really loud Civic.

Borla is a solid choice. Other not overly loud options (if you can find them) would include:

Invidia Gemini
Fujitsubo Legalis R
Nismo S-tune
Revel Medallion

I had both invidia and motordyne paired with art pipes.

Invidia was growly, motordyne was growly but got kinda raspy at higher rpm

I currently have a Motordyne TDXv2 and while it is loud I love it. Previously I ran a Turbo XS catback exhaust system and I was happy w it for many years. I still have it and will sell for super cheap if interested. I believe its in very good shape and i’m in Jersey. Just needs new gaskets and banjo bolts.

Thinking of going with invidia gemini catback, everything else on my car is stock except for a takeda stage 2 air intake. Anybody who has the gemini will this be too loud for close neighbors? Im guessing not just want to make sure.

If that's the invidia that looks similar to the hks hi-power and all its replicas, the sound from the 2.5 inch piping might not be to your liking. All the exhausts that heel_ posted are very oem+ sounding with the nismo s-tune and the revel medallion being the "loudest" of the bunch. Gains are minimal without a tune with any bolt on parts, but if power increase is also a factor i would just save up and get a new or used motordyne exhaust. They make the most power, quality and design is nasa spec, and if you have any bit of throttle control they can be pretty tame when cruising ~2500-3500 rpms (in my vq35de). I've had 10+ exhausts over the years and still have 6 different ones in my garage.

Yeah I have heard that, I honestly am going for a deep tone and grumble compared to just going for pure loudness. Maybe in the future I get some test pipes and what not.

Test pipes will produce the "pure loudness" that you're trying to avoid. You'd be better off getting some HFCs or something with a resonator as opposed to a straight-through design with test pipes. The Invidia Gemini is not that much louder than stock and your neighbors should not be too angry.

The Motordyne TDX2 and HKS Hi-Power have Helmholtz resonators right before the exits which help quiet the exhaust when cruising but scream at WOT. They are MUCH louder than stock even at idle, though.

he is in cali, so no test pipes and would prob be hard to find HFC that are carb certified..

unless he wants to change them every couple of years

Wow that is all really helpful thank you. I recently saw a video of a g37 with the full motordyne setup w the motordyne art pipes and it sounded immaculate imo.

I've been leaning more and more towards the motordyne setup it's just the price that's holding me back, currently I'm in college haha.

Crazy to think about the good ol' days when Motordyne was just getting going, I got a shockwave v1 from Tony for like $1400.00 shipped! also got the raw v1 set of ART pipes for like $600 shipped!
