Default 350Z on Upcoming MotorWeek

The upcoming Saturday March 6 MotorWeek show will feature a 2004 350Z. Looks like they will have some track footage as part of a comparison to the 2004 RX-8. This should be fun and interesting.

There may also be some references to the NEW Honda S2000. They had it on the track at the same time (but not in a direct compatioson) as the 350Z and the RX-8 and the S2000 turned better numbers that both of these cars.

Are you planning to watch?

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm hoping to catch it, but even hoping more that someone will Tivo it and then have it converted into something that the board can see.

i think the 350z will be better than it in most categories, besides size or less room possibly.. i test drove an rx-8 b4 i purchased my Z last week and theres no comparison in handling and speed.

Yes, the 350Z will surely put down the better numbers in most categories. The only exception might be in braking, not sure. And like you say, the RX-8 will probably get better marks for "utility" with more room/seating, ease of driving, etc. Should be fun to watch. It would be nice if they would have included the S2000 in this since they had it on the track at the same time.

It should also air on the Speed Channel sometime after it airs on PBS.

After a bit more research I will revise my comments here. It appears that the numbers should be about the same for both cars in all performance caregories. The only category where there will be a significant difference is straight line acceleration. The Z should have much better numbers in that category, say at least a half second or more faster in the quarter mile.

They said that the Z put up better numbers, but that the handling and lower price of the RX-8 gave the nod to the mazda.

Did anyone catch the numbers? I think the two cars were fairly even except in straight line acceleration. Is that true?

I'm beginning to HATE that RX-8. Gimme a break. In terms of straight line performance, the Z crushes it. High 14s for the Mazda, High 13s for the Z.

Handling and lower pricing the basis of giving the nod to the rx-8? Last I saw in motor trend, who also picked the rx-8 over the Z, the rx-8's handling was only marginally (slightly) better than the z. Price? The higher power rx-8 is 27K.

I understand when you use "practicality" to base why the rx-8 is better... but really, gimme a break.

At least the EUROPEANs "get it." Car Magazine along with Evo, say the RX-8 is "soulless." Throw in the RX-8 being a hell of a lot slower. I've lost faith in American opinions. The press here puts "practicality" and "huge" at the top of the list. Not to mention opinions are easily swayed with a little moohlah.

When I look at the numbers, the Z compared to the RX-8 is by far the superior car. I don't get it.

This might be the start of a rivalry not unlike the STi/EVO thing.

BTW, I'd love to see both cars go head to head around a track. If the RX-8 beats the Z, my rants are for ****. BTW, to those who saw the RX-8 Best Motoring DVD, did the Z and the RX-8 go head to head in a comparo?
