I`ve read a few threads about the nasty reaction people have had from other drivers to there Z.
To be honest, the most snobby attitude and looks of indifference I have had have been form other Z and G35 drivers!
I look over and wave, and I ususally get no reaction, they look away, or they look at me like, "What?" or "Do I know you?"
I think some of it has to do with the fact that in Canada, Nissan does not sell the base model Z, so the cheapest Z here is in the mid 40`s so it`s mostly a late 30`s 40`s age group that drives them. I don`t think most of the G35 drivers here even know that the Z and g35 are practically the same car.
I swear I get more nods of approval and thumbs up from Honda and Acura drivers

 

i was totally thinking about starting a thread about this earlier today...

i've seen maybe 5-6 other Z's around here lately, and im sure to slow down and look over and give a thumbs up, but most of the old guys just keep looking straight and think theyre so much better than me for some reason...

im sorry, its not liike youre driving a freakin ferrari and you can be the only one on the road to have one.... its about the enthusiasm...

What is the big deal anyway? I still don't understand the significance of waving and getting/giving thumbs up between Z owners. Am I obligated to smile and wave back at you just because we drive the same car? How about if we both were driving Civics or Neons?

Personally, I think the attitude that "I drive a Z, I belong to an exclusive club with a secret handshake that all fellow Z drivers must acknowledge" is sort of lame. People buy the cars they drive for their own reasons and judging people by the way they react to you acting like a dork makes no sense at all.

 

OMFG Acting like a dork? Since when is being half *** friendly being a dork? It has nothing to do with some "Exclusive club"
and I think driving a Z is a little different that driving a Neon or a Civic.
Maybe in L.A were if you wave to someone from your car they think your throwing down a gang symbol and were half the people carry guns in there car you are wise not to wave

What an interesting thread so far. If I see other 350Z drivers while I'm in mine, I usually give people a thumbs up and almost always wave or give a thumbs up in return.

 

an older man 60's or so drove up in a silverstone Z at the gas station right behind me the other day and got out walked around my car and said, "nice car". with a smile. I told him , "yea you too", then we both laughed at the civic leave with the salad shooter on the back trying to show off for the two Z's.

 

Why look or expect approval from another driver? Don't take things so personal. Just enjoy your car and goto a meet where others can admire your car.

 

Maybe I'm just not the friendly sort, but I'm kind of with dchengmd (although I probably feel a bit less harsh about it). I just don't feel the need to visually search out other people driving the same car, slow down, look their car over, catch their attention, and exchange silent pleasantries from inside our vehicles. The Z is the 4th sports car I've owned in a row. I drive sports cars because I enjoy the visceral experience of driving, not because I want to belong to a club. If I didn't enjoy driving, I'd probably buy something like a Lexus GS 300 with all the luxury features to insulate me from the big bad world. But in either case, waving at strangers in a situation where it is impossible to actually interact with each other from inside our cozy little fishbowls isn't a priority.

 

I'm with BDM above. I meant no malice to anyone who does wave etc., but honestly I was just wondering what the appeal of it was. Perhaps I was a bit strong in saying that kind of behavior was dorky, and if you're offended by that, I apologize.

BDM pretty much stated perfectly how I feel about the situation. I just don't see the need or appeal to catch someone's attention and lavish praise on their choice of automobile just because I happen to be driving the same car. There just doesn't seem to be any purpose in it, except to stroke some egos. I can do without it - there are more important things in life than how many looks (jealous, admiring, or otherwise) and compliments I get from a car. But hey - if that's what's important in your life, more power to you.

As for RJ_Vancouver's polite little response: first of all, I'd like to see your proof that 'half' of the people here in LA carry guns in their car. Second - what is the difference between a Z and a Civic or a Neon with respect to this discussion? If you drove a Civic and pulled up to another person driving a Civic and gave him a thumbs up, that behavior amounts to the same thing - the point is, you're driving the same car as the other person. As for the 'dumbass' comment - well, I guess it's pretty obvious why the people you're waving at are ignoring you. Hope you enjoy your first strike.

Seriously, people - get a grip. It really is lame to get offended just because your props weren't acknowledged by a complete and total stranger. There are more meaningful things in life to be concerned about than a car.

 

How about you're wife/girlfriend's ex's - do they get a "thumbs up", too?

 

 

I've wondered about this too. If you ride a motorcycle, then you know that it's good motorcycle etiquette to wave at fellow riders, regardless of what they're riding. Although, there's always debate, because a lot of Harley and Goldwing riders ignore sportbikes, some sportbikes ignore cruisers, etc.

I've waived at other Z's before, and even though most of them usually don't get it, I'm not offended. The idea is not that we drive an exclusive vehicle (bikes often cost less than $10k), but that we are enthusiasts. I have several friends that hate cars and only drive out of necessity. That's why there will never be a Honda Odyssey site that's as active as this board, nor will you ever see two Odyssey drivers wave unless their kids are on the same soccer team.

As mentioned previously, it's not about exclusivity, it's about enthusiasm. Anyone who buys the Z for some reason other than the fact that it's a sports car is a poseur.

p.s. I'm not implying that only non-poseurs wave!!!!!!

Me too. I live in the rural southeast. The people down here almost always wave as they pass other cars in the neighborhood. It's almost like anti-LA here. You can leave your car running when you run into the store and if you leave your house open your stuff is still in it when you get home!
