Question wtf... did something blow on my Z ???

i was in my car, started it up, waited about 1-2 min. for it to warm up, i lowered the e-brake, put it in first started slowly letting off the clutch and BOOM... wtf? actually it was more like 'clunk' but it was very loud, and it scared the **** outta me! i waited about a min. trying to think of what it could be, but couldn't think of anything, so i said f*kit and just drove away like normal w/out any problems whatsoever... my car has done this once before in the winter time when it was like 0 degrees outside, same exact thing, but i never thought much of it... anyone have any clue what that sound was, or if something not ok w/ my car?

My car did this yesterday after it had been parked for a while in heavy rain. I think the brake pad gets stuck to the rotor and when you move it breaks free. Maybe rust or something builds up.. not sure. I think it's normal though.

Same here. People have told me it's the rear axles and they need to be retorqued, re-lubed, or the combination of the two. It's only happened to me when it gets a bit cold outside.

i drive my car everyday... it has been raining for a couple days... i have been getting a real annoying squeek from the rear passenger side whenever the car 'bounces' even very slightly, like a sueeking spring..? but i think it's coming from inside the big @ss strut in the tunk (passenger side rear)... i did go to the dealer a couple thousand mile ago for that 'clicking' noise problem whenever you brake after switching from 1st-reverse (viceversa)

It's the brake pads sticking to the rotors, happens quite often when it's raining and the car sits for a period of 12 or more hours...

My car does this sporadically as well. Does anyone know how the emergency/parking brake works on a car with disk brakes all around? Does it just engage the rear brakes?

When investigating the common rear axle clicking noise recently, my dealer found that the rear pads were sticking on their sliders which was also causing some noise. They cleaned and lubed them, so i wonder if this will solve the sticking??

The e-brake has a drum design inside of the rear brake rotors. When you pull up, the shoe locks against the inside of the rotor.

Are you sure about this? I have never heard of anything like this before? A drum inside a disc? Seems overly complicated.

ranger5oh -

Yes this is how it is on pretty much every car with four wheel brake disks. Factoid: this is also why you don't see many 13" four piston brake kits from aftermarket companies like StopTech - it's much harder to build a cost effective rear brake kit that retains the functionality of the parking brake than doing a front kit.

Is the squeaking you hear faint and sound kinda like a cricket chirping?

A drum brake is used because it holds better than a disk brake and it's way easier to do a mechanical drum brake than a mechanical disk brake. Some Hondas I've seen have used the rear disk for the parking brake. If you think a drum inside of a disk is complicated, take a look at one of Honda's. Sheesh. What they had to go through to get a disk brake to be both hydraulic for normal operation and mechanical for a parking brake was most impressively complicated.

My solution is to not use the parking brake unless I'm on a hill. Just leaving it in gear is enough usually. If you're going to leave your car for over several weeks, don't set the brake.

Same thing happens to me after washing ... almost like a popping sound once the clutch is engaged and the car starts moving forward. After that ... nothing until the next washing.

the best way i can describe the squeek is that it's just like a rattle, but it squeeks instead... i get it whenever the car bounces (even slightly), it comes from the pasenger side rear of the car... i think i narrowed the location of it down to the inside of the strut in the trunk (pas. side), but the car is so small, and the wheel well is not too far away, so i can't be sure it's not coming from the strut the squeek has died down the past couple of days, so now i get it sporadically... i dunno if this is good or bad because now i probably won't even be able to replicate it to the dealer
