i did 150 on stock tires...it was cold out, so it was a bit scary. Probably won't do it again, although I have gone 120+ since.

LOL, I don't think so. There's a warning sticker in my center console warning of sustained speeds above 55! LOL! 55? Please. I know, theier just covering thier butts. But seriously, I just don't trust that tire. And for the guy asking if you really think there's a big difference between 120 and 160? Have you ever driven a car above 120? Believe me, there's a big difference. For one thing, around 135 tunnel vision begins to kick in. It's an entirely new dimention.

Mine is the Base so my tires are only H rated I think. So my max is around 130mph .What would happen if you went faster than the speed rating? Will it blow up?

Even the Base model has W rated tires. It's possible the tire may fail if you exceed the speed rating.

First, if you DO do it, don’t worry about the seatbelt. When you wipe out at that speed it doesn’t matter if you belted in or not.

Secondly, I agree with most people here; I would not recommend it. As previously mentioned just the slightest twitch of the wheel, a turtle or beer can on the road, a pot hole, etc. will mean the end. And at that speed it wouldn’t take much.

Remember the difference between 100 MPH and 160 MPH is similar to the difference between 20 MPH & 80 MPH. Stop and think about that. I’m sure you’ve done 100, but 160 is in another universe. There is NO reaction time. You’ll see a problem, hit it, spin, & die. Hopefully, you’ll be able to make peace with your Maker in those final 2 seconds.

[gets on soapbox] Of course, I’m an old man. You don’t want to listen to me or anyone else on this thread who is advising against it. I’m sure you’re like most kids, like my kids, you’re going to do what you want to do and probably couldn’t care less about what old farts like me think.

I’ve had family members and friends to die in auto accidents. The funerals weren’t fun. After going through that experience, it tends to adjust one’s attitude.

A hundred years ago, when I was 19, one of my best friends died in an auto accident. He was 18 and he was wearing a seatbelt. But the seatbelt didn’t stop the steering wheel from going through his chest. I was a pallbearer at his funeral –boy, was that real fun.

If you want to test you Z, go to the track, and do it right. But if you want to ‘test’ it on public roads, BE VERY SURE they are deserted so the only person that dies is yourself. [/off soapbox]

Oh, and I see you have the base model, correct? No TCS, no VDC, 17’ wheels, & no Brembos….

Sheeesh….

Good luck, kid.

With all due respect marhot,

At 160 mph...I think all those above options would fly out the window!

All of you who say "slight twist of the wheel equals death at 150mph" obviously havent gone 150mph in a z33 and tried it. So stop talking out of your a$$.

When I did my 159mph run, a car pulled out in front of me while I was going 155mph. I had to pass him (2 lane road) at 150mph. I then proceeded all the way up to 159mph. When I hit 159, I stayed there for a few seconds (speed limited) and realized a curve was coming up. I got off the accelerator and hit the breaks. (and yes 350zephyr, this is where VDC comes into play!) Car wobbled a little but for the most part, very stable.

So in short, those of you HAVENT tried 150mph+ in a 350z, please stfu and get your facts straight

Oh I don't doubt that you cannot control your car at 160 mph. We're talking about the possibility of things going wrong. Theres not much you can do if the car goes out of control at 150 as oppose to 80 mph. I think the survival rate is not that great either unless our Z's were reinforced with rollcages..harness etc..but even with those safety features you'd still be very lucky.

Are we getting back on the VDC argument again? I thought we all agreed that non-VDC owners are all dead meat?

I think you can agree with me that VDC will not save you from lack of common sense...even at 160 mph you'll still be dead meat if your car was to go out of control. What VDC did for you can't be applied to EVERY situation. I know I wouldn't have "hit" on the brakes like you indicated. I would have throttled it, and that's probably what VDC did for you.

Most of us probably wouldn't have taken the car up to 160 mph without knowing there was a curve up ahead in the FIRST place. That's just common sense. Are you really going to rely on VDC to get you out of a 160 mph rip??

Like I said before, I'm sure our cars are capable of stability at that speed and trust me I've been close. The rest of the forum members are just trying to put some "caution" on the table in case someone, such as yourself, is daring enough. I don't think we should get ripped for THAT?

Actually, all you really need to do is check out any Road and Track article or CorvetteForum.com to see that the Vette handles better than the Z at high speeds.

Oh, and I'm not really sure that ownership of a Z should be an issue here. Go and flame somewhere else.

1) I read CorvetteForum regularly and they talk about the 1/4 more than anything.

2) Looks like we have us one of these...

My 2 cents. I love handling and acceleration. Top speed isn't that great, although it is a rush.

You know you shouldn't go that fast. But if no one can stop you you better inspect every inch of that road for potholes or big bumps (before hand). Without a roll cage and proper racing harness your chances of dying after hitting a pothole or blowing a tire are pretty high.

After 3 pages of replies, I'll provide a simple answer. You can't! There is no such thing as an "EMPTY" stretch of road between LA and Vegas. I just did the San Diego - Vegas run last weekend and it reminded me why I bought an automatic.

Need For Speed? Try doing 163 MPH on Sport Bike and bouncing off the rev limiter, THATS an adreniline rush. Everything to the sides is a solid blur while your pushing the pavement underneath @ 240 feet/sec . Just make sure your head is tucked under the windshield and don't lift your head up, the drag from the air getting under your helmet will rip you off the bike!
