Default Is this possible? California Highway Patrol 350z?

No, I'm not kidding...

I just had a friend give me a call and asked me if I knew anything about a CHiP 350z.

He was pulling off an on ramp and there wasn't an easy on ramp so he let it get away
before he could confirm but:

He believes it was a Black 350z, with white emblems on the doors, with "something" up in the front,
which resembled the CHP logos, and inside "pull you over" lighting kit.

This might be a show car, or he could be wrong altogether, but if it isn't, what's up?

BTW, this occurred this morning, on the 118E freeway around 10:00AM in "the valley". So that should be between TAMPA and maybe Sepulveda.

Anyone know anything about this?

They make cop cars out of all kinds of things...hummers, camaros, corvettes and 350z's now aparently. I've never seen them actually making a traffic stop, but going to school events and other promotional things like that for show. Who knows though, law doesn't say the cop car pulling you over has to be a crown vic.

I wouldn't be surprised if its purpose was to use on highways. The towns in Jersey with Z28s don't use them for routine pullovers, but rather to chase people on highways.

I recall seeing SS Camero's and Corvette's having cars pulled over in Wisconsin. I am sure they are in Cali.

Yep we definately got them here in SoCal, not sure if they are Z28's or SS but that really doesn't matter both are fast as hell for the tax dollars.

The few here in San Diego are white with low profile lights on the roof about 5inches tall.

Real slick looking and hard to distiguish as CHP from a distance. Apparently they are used strictly for catching speeders and other similar high speed tasks.

I wonder if the CHP guys argue over who gets to take them out on patrol.

In the past, police departments have relied completely on domestic auto manufacturers for squad cars. Z28's and Z06's for sure, but I doubt it was a cop if it was a Z.

I believe most of those cars are seizures. Get caught drag racing in the wrong state, and that might happen to your car!

I've seen a few non-domestics around here, including a Pathfinder.

If you were a cop, would you really want a 350Z? I don't think I would. Way too small. A M45 might be cool, though!

Did you see the recent reality show with Erik Estrada (Ponch) on it? I think he was on with Vanilla Ice and a bunch of other has-beens. He looked pretty out of shape. Maybe they retired him from his motorcycle and put him in a Z cruiser?

It is most likely a siezure car involved in a drug bust. I have seen some really random cars outfitted for police use after siezure.

Would love a photo...

Here some cops drive Volvos. I think cops drive different cars because they are given to the force in exchange for the advertising. I know Don Beyer gave a bunch of Expeditions and Volvos to the force, but most undercover cops around here push Impalas (the new one)

I remember back in the late 80's/early 90's, here in California they actually had a few CHP officers making stops in Saleen Mustangs. Didn't quite catch on as they went right back to the good ol Crown Victorias with the front headlights you can spot from a mile away.

It's my understanding as well that police, by law, must purchase domestic cars (and uniforms/guns/equipment) only.

Though it could also be from a seizure; I'm not sure how those fit into the picture.

This is not the case, at least in california, I myself have seen the vettes, camaros, expeditions, explorers, broncos, mustangs.

Most likely from seizures, but in either case they are using non caprice/victorias.

Anything they can do to "make the streets/highway safer" is most likely the case now due to the "idiots".

Last week on the 118 East, the CHiPs halted the the freeway because a couple imports where racing and made contact, that may be what brough the Z or other non-standard-issue vehicle into the picture lately.

We'll see...

Oddest car I've seen was about six years ago in SC when a SC State Trooper passed me in a silver E36 M3.
