First speeding ticket!
get a lawyer. If you get a lawyer who is friends with the judge he will reduce it. This is how it works in VA. I have seen people with no lawyers and they get no break. If you have a representative then they get reduced with classroom etc.
for gods sake, 85 is too fast? please soccer moms drive that fast with no control over their car. WTF??? my friend do like 130-145 on major hwys with rader.
sorry to hear...

Definitely go to court. You can't have anything worse happen than if you just plead guilty, pay the ticket and take the lumps.
I don't know about anywhere else in the country, but here in NC we have this nice thing called "Prayer for Judgement Continued" where, if you haven't had a ticket for a couple of years they give you a PJC. Basically what that means is that you pay the fine but you don't get the conviction or the points! Everybody's happy! The caveat is that if you get another ticket within a couple of years you get BOTH on your record.
Even if you can't get a PJC, just showing up dressed nicely and being respectful can earn you benefits. Let me say it again: The absolute worst you can get is what will happen if you just pay the ticket.

Pigs suck! Especially NYPD Highway Patrol Pigs.
We don't get breaks here from the cops or from the judges. Event #1: I got pinched a year ago in the winter, and the cop was so pissed off that he had to get out of his warm cruiser, that he added about 10 mph more to my "paced" speed. Then, in court, the judge laughed at any attmepts on my part to tell him that the cop was just being a *****, and was snowballing me.
Event #2: Speaking of felonies, I was 18 and had an 87 Z. So I decided to see how fast I could take it before it lifted off the ground.
I got it up to 100 in a 40.... That's when I saw the cop in a Mustang GT sitting in the median. I left skidmarks half the length of a football field long. To make a long story short, even with a lawyer, I got slapped with 11 points in one shot. Learned my lesson that day.
And the lesson is: BUY A GOOD RADAR DETECTOR AND THEN SPEED!!!
That's my Z ticket story.

Give me a break! You didn't really expect leniency after getting caught pulling a stunt like that, did you?

Actually those 2 were completely different events.

z350z,
I got a couple tickets back in College (72 in a 55 which is now a 65/70 zone and then 72 in a 65 - yeah, yeah, 72 is my "cruizing spee") and back then you only had to have 18 months between tickets to be eligible for traffic school. It may have been increased to 3 years since then, but I'm not sure. If you are eligible, and don't want to try fighting it, then traffic school is definitely the way to go. Also, even if you are not eligible, depending on your insurance company you may still be in the clear. I know that with State Farm if you get an A++ rating you get one ticket free every 3 years or so.
Also, I think you work across the street from me. I've occasionally seen a Daytona 350 with Gilroy dealer plates on the back when I go to lunch.
Check out the Brooks-PRI parking lot on Bernardo and you might see my Brickyard 350 out there.
Good luck with the ticket.
