Gas mileage doesn't add up?
Alright, obviously I didn't buy a sports car for its ability to get good gas mileage. However in light of the number’s I’m seeing, I wanted to see if it is just my car, or a conglomerate the might be seeing the same numbers.
I broke my car in over the last 2 weeks. I followed all instructions and added a few of my own (didn’t over rev 4000rpm, didn’t bog engine down, didn’t accelerate rapidly, changed oil at 500mi, etc). I now have 1400 miles on my car. I am aware that proper break in on a car can help both gas mileage, and performance. That is why I am a little bothered by the numbers I am seeing. I have been regularly getting 19mpg around town, and 21 on highway. When the car had 10 miles on it I seemed to get the posted 24mpg around town and such. I believe 26mpg is the posted number for highway.
Again I realize it is a performance car, I just want to make sure what I’m seeing is correct, or maybe my computer is not accurate. My ’94 300ZX TT used to get 25mpg regularly.
Thank you

Just this weekend I went on a drive where the total round trip miles were about 210 milese or so.
I reset the trip/mpg computer to check my mileage.
For the first 120 miles I averaged 66.4 mph with a 26.2 mpg.
For the last part of the trip I hit alot of traffic which was stop and go. However my final total was 24.7 mpg with an average speed of 55.7 mph.
Car only has about 800 miles on it. Not bad in my book!

I can not believe my MPG on break-in, its 26.7 with the A/C and 27.9 without the A/C at an average of 42 MPH for both. The automatic calulator is very accurate, but if figured the MPG the old way (pencil and paper).

Thanks for all the feedback. I do reset the computer gas mileage in order to get a more accurate number. Again, when I had very low miles (in the hundreds) I saw a match in the posted numbers, and the type of mileage I was getting (between 24 to 26mpg). Now that I have the break in over with, I've been paying more attention to it. I am going on a 70+mi highway trip tonight, so I'll reset it and see where my numbers come in. I will also do it the old fashion way (pen + paper) and see if they match.
Thanks again for the numbers. I'm surprised at the person who got 27.9mph with no A/C ... those are some impressive numbers!

Simple Logic can answer this question. After break-in you are driving at higher RPMS right? Higher RPM = More gas = crappier gas mileage. If you drive your car calmly, very, calmly, like, break-in calmly you will get higher gas mileage. If you enjoy your self a bit more, you get less gas mileage. Its all relative to how you drive. For an expeiriment take 1 tank of gas and for that tank keep it way below 4000 rpm and never floor it or accelerate hard. Unless your fuel tank has a hole in it you should get a lot better gas mileage than you are now. For example a GT2 can get like 20mpg if driven rationaly. On a track it gets like 8.2 or some ridiculous number like that. Most 350z drivers would probaly fall somewhere in between, insane and boring. I know that there have been times when I wondered whether or not someone was siphoning gas out of my bmw because I was getting crappy gas mileage when in fact, I was just enjoying myself.

My Maxima shows a calculated MPG of about 32mpg on highway trips and about 26mpg around town. When calculated the old fashion way, it is off by 2 to 3 mpg. The MPG calculator gives a high number and is not to be trusted as true MPG.
Getting 9 l/100km on the highway at 130 km/h. (26.1 mi/gal at 80 mi/h) with air on.
In the city it gets crappy, going as high as 14 l/100km, but typically 12.5 l/100km. (18.8 mi/gal) I don't drive like Granny.
