Default Honest opinions...please read!

Hey, I'm really new here and this is my first post. I've been 16 for about 10 months, but I don't know if I can wait any longer without having a car, esp. this summer. I'm truly ok with driving my parents cars to work-Mom has a BMW 740i, Dad-BMW 328 & Ford Explorer, like a 1993. My aunt is offering me her 2004 Silverstone Touring Z because she feels it isn't a "daily driver". I prolly won't be getting this car until the end of the year, but that is a REALLY long time from now. In everyone's opinion, would you wait like 1yr. 1/2 to accept a Z, or go ahead and buy like a used 2000 Mustang GT, and when she gives me her Z, trade the GT in? I'm looking for straightforward answers, I'm not irresponsible, I have a good-paying job, hard-working student, and very trustworthy(she even lets me drive her car by myself) so I know how most Z owners on the site feel about younger "unexperienced" drivers. Any opinions welcome!

I say dont even get something superspecial like a gt or something, get a bucket and drive around in that. that way you can continue to save money and not make payments toward your gt and lose money in the long run when you go to trade it in..

You should wait. Use that good paying job to save up some money until the end of the year, that way you can be responsible for your own insurance and have money for the all too necessary mods. That's my opinion, hope it helps.

If you're getting the Z at the end of the year - in 6 months , just wait for it... in the meantime , drive one of your parents car , and instead of buying slow , ugly POS stang GT - save your $ for some Z mods.. good luck

Ditto...don't get caught up in the "I have to have a car right now!!" B.S. Save your loot and take the shoe leather express. Good things come to those who wait.

Find yourself a nice used car. Don't spend more than a thousand dollars. A nice pick-up truck would be cool. That should get you around just fine.

Now then, if you can find a nice girl who doesn't really care what you're driving around in and likes you for who you are and not what you drive, you just scored big.

Definatly buy a cheap Toyota 4x4 as a daily driver and save your money for the Z. Then when you get your Z you've got a bad weather 4x4 to drive when you need it.

Thanks everyone. I'm gonna wait so I can save for the Z. It is very expensive to maintain, and I know its better if I save so I can keep it up. "lbsohk"who's that hot girl icon?!?!?!*If its like your GF or wife, excuse me...
Wat's so bad about a "GT"?

Buy a Mustang GT for a few months and then trade it in when you get the Z ? Trade it in for what ? you get the Z from someone else so your not trading the GT for it. Doesnt make sense.

Your family must be loaded cuz I wouldnt let my kid buy a car for a few months then get rid of it in 6 months. Especially when you have cars to drive, nice ones too.

Drive your parents cars for 6 months. The time will pass quickly.

Have a little patience, wait for it.

DISCLAIMER: The following is not a flame. I repeat, the following is not a flame. I have no dislike for you as a person. I don't know you, so I speak of generalities and out of 14 years of experience that you don't have yet. Below my rant is an actual response to your post. Hope it helps.[/DISCLAIMER]

First, let me say that it's great you're willing to put up with having to drive one or the other of your parents BMW's around. I'm glad to hear that you're not totally out of touch with the harsh realities of life. (Now, I know that's not how you meant it, but for those of us who drove around in 12 year old VW's with 200K on the odometer in H.S., we don't have alot of sympathy for statements like that).

Second, I personally (and it's just me, and I know you didn't ask), think no 17 year old should have a Z as a first car. I refer again to my analogy about the fighter pilot. When they start training, Uncle Sam doesn't strap a brand-new pilot into an F-15 and tell them to go have fun. They start off in some pissy (but very stable) little trainer where they learn aviation basics. Then when they have been through a few "oh-****'s", they are more prepared to deal with those same but very amplified situations in a multi-million dollar fighter. Cars are the same way. That's just me and my old school thinking, and I know you don't care (and you're really responsible...blah blah blah), but teens are teens. Just don't f' up yourself or someone else driving like an @ss in your free $30K sports car. If you do, you better never come tell anyone on this forum because teenagers having sports cars has been somewhat of a hot topic around here lately.

[/RANT]

Now, to answer your question, if you just gotta have a car, I'd find the safest, best running 1 or 2 thousand dollar piece of crap you can get your hands on and drive the hell out of it through the summer/fall/winter, etc. At least that way it's YOUR car, you can say YOU bought it, and you get to experience the "posessiveness" that comes from actually having bought something that you own. Guaranteed you'll love your Z, and you'll probably (not prolly) take good care of it, but you won't have paid for it, so it won't be the same, you'll see. When you get your Z, hold on to the POS and drive it around every now and again just to keep the tires rolling and the seals lubed. You might need it when the Z is in the shop, and that way, you won't have to borrow one of your parent's cars, you can drive your "other car". Neat huh? It's also fun going from POS to Z. You'll fall in love with the Z all over again every time you get back into it after driving the POS. Additionally, many insurance companies give discounts to "multi-car policy holders".

Curious, are you paying for all of your Z related expenses considering that you'll have no car payment? If so, have you looked at what insurance costs for a 17 year old in a Z? That number (based on what I've heard from others on the forum) is pretty darn staggering. Also think about the fact that at 17, you've got ALOT of big changes coming up in your life (unless you plan on sitting on your butt in mom and dad's house like a bum for the foreseeable future ) You still gonna be able to afford the car down the road?

Anyway, good luck, and seriously, if you do get the Z, enjoy it, but make a concerted effort to be safe everytime you get in the car. You know how much power it has, and it would be a shame to hear about you becoming a grease stain on the road somehwhere because your testosterone got the best of you.

Peace out!

Yeah, thats great advice, and yes, I take everyones opinions in. My aunt, who's giving me her Z, owns her own Insurance company, as well as her own Real Estate Company. She'll prolly be my agent, but I don't know, I'll prolly be on my parents insurance. I KNOW that insurance, regardless of my age will be VERY HIGH, and I understand that. My dad has a 1993 Ford Explorer and that's what i'll be driving in the mean time. It's clean, it's free, It's paid-off and I'll have money saved up, at least around $8K by the end of the year... I turn 17 this Oct, but the thing is, I don't know if I should wait for her Z(6 mo. is not long at all, it maybe longer than 6 mo.), or if my parents will be buying me a car, used, or new, and I'm very grateful for that. My dad wants to buy me a Lexus IS300, but I don't know, as a matter of opinion, I don't know what to do...I'll still have money saved up regardless of WHAT I get. Thanks for all the help everyone, any more opinions are welcomed!

Oh yeah, and my college is already paid for! I've been getting reccommendations from other colleges(from my test scores and grades) to visit their campuses, just for anyone who thinks I'm a normal, slacker-type teenager...

"My college is already paid for and my dad wants to buy me a Lexus, but I'm not sure if I want one of THOSE cars". For GOD'S SAKE MAN, don't settle for a Lexus at 17. You deserve far better than that!!!

Hold me back!!!!... Hold me back!!!!

Good luck kid. I hope the real world is nice to you.

I'll gladly hold you back. The kid came here asking for help, which you gave in an earlier post, but then come back to just flame him. Granted I can see why you say what you do but, chill out.

And kcobean! Man, relax! The guys lucky, hes got it made! I wish I had it like that. Im poor man, like POOR, so I know where your coming from, but man, dont hate. Give him driving tips if your worried about his driving. Be possitive bro!

Hey Kurt, I've been reading your posts on this thread, and you made my day... First with your wise words, then with your vitriolic response. Too funny....

"Hold me back!!! Hold me back!!!" is what I also felt inside when I first read the post from the 16 yrs old (I can tell from the writing that even though he's young, he seems to have a good head on his shoulder). But hey, if you were born with a silver spoon in your pie hole, why not take advantage of it? Besides, do you expect the kid to drive up to his gated community dwellings in a beat-up old clunker?
