Default Clanking sound?

Well, So far, my Z only has about 500 miles on it.... And ive noticed that when Im shifting from 1st --> 2nd when pressing the clutch I hear some clanking sound, like 2 metals are being hit together... its a very disturbing sound! as if something is going to fall out from under my car! it only happens at low speends like 20mph or below... Anyone else ever had this problem? What should I do?

It doesnt happen ALL the time, but every so often, and when it DOES happen... I dont know what to think, except look behind my car for pieces that might have fallen off

1) Make sure the seatbelts are hooked on the panel hooks.

2) If noise comes from the rear, go to dealer and ask to check the rear axles (there is a TSB on this but I don't have the # with me sorry).

3) Good luck and post the problem once you find it.

Default me too

I have the exact same problem... sometimes it also happens if I'm driving along in 1st gear and I put the clutch in as I stop. It's annoying as hell, I really should get it fixed... The only problem is whenever I take it to the dealer they can't reproduce the problem.

Same here guys! I have taken my Z three times and the dealers cant reproduce the issue. My Z was built on 02/04. I hear chattering and clunking noise when I shift from 1st to 2nd, downshifting from 3rd to 2nd at low rpms and speeds and putting the car on neutral from 1st. This is really disappointing. I fooled a Nissan Sales rep to test drive a 2004 Z built in 04/04 and I didnt hear the same clank or chattering noise during shifting. The shifting was nothcy but was better than my car. I will take my car back to the dealer for the same reason and for other reasons.

Is it only when you are pushing the clutch in?

I have an issue where, if I am driving slower than 20 mph in first or second and I left off the gas.. and just slow down through the gear.. it makes a tinking noise from the rear for about a second. It happens on pulling from a stop and letting off the gas allowing the gear to slow you down? They said it was my aftermarket rims, but I knew better. THe guys that put in my TT said it could be the brakes. They need replaceing and the brake dust thing may have been moved... not sure, but they also said they aren't sure if that is the exact cause though.

It only happens to me when I let off the clutch midway and then quickly depress it at first gear, like in traffic or at a toll booth.

I have that exact sound. to me it doesn't sound like the tranny.
it sounds like a piece is loose from the front. and it clanks when i am going slow over a speed bump, or when i shift 1-2 when i first start up the car.

It sounds like fairly large piece of metal tapping on another piece.
like chassis almost. it doesn't sound like a tap, but like a heavy thunk.

I thought it was just my car until now.

My car was also built 4/04 ... So now at least I know its not just me... And the way that you have all described it is the same way I hear it on my car also... Now the problem is trying to get the dealer to reproduce the sound, because not even I can do it all the time, its just very random... but enough of a problem that I want it to be taken care of. Does anyone have an idea of what exactly it might be?? That way I can go in and say "Hey take a look at this exact part on my car" type of thing.

Wow - I have 1000 miles and mine occurs (not all the time) when I start out from a dead stop and then 1st to 2nd. Dealer says not a problem.

Same thing happens to me, I hate that sound! I try to let the engine wind all the way down to 1,000 rpms before I push in the clutch so it isn't as noticeable. I usually hear it when pulling into my garage.

I'll chime in too. I just posted about this yesterday on here and now I can see why no one responded to my post....there is THIS thread already! Heh.

So yeah, 1st to 2nd....old metal springs in a matress compressing sound. Best description I can think of.

I do drive the hell out of it and haven't had any issues shifting. So I don't know what it is.

I will just live with it and when my loan is up trade it in for a new twin turbo Skyline..yup....oh yeah....I will......you betcha baby!
