Question NISMO Exhaust - How to reduce loudness

I installed a Nismo cat-back exhaust along with some Crawford high-flow cats on my Infiniti FX35. The resulting exhaust not was way too loud for this type of car. My wife immediately vetoed the change. I think the were the reason it was too loud.

No one has shown interest in buying the exhaust from me, so I'm thinking about giving it a second try with some modifications. Anyone have experience with custom exhausts? What should I do? I think the midpipe has a straight-through resonator. So the only option is to change this somehow. There is not enough room for a second resonator anywhere.

My other throught was to use the stock muffler, especially since that way I won't have to extend the Nismo's exhause tips. But this would require some modification to that piece too, in which case I'd have no way to back out.

IF you want remove the crawford cats that will reduce the noise but suffer your performance or you can try to put 350z stock exhaust.

I would just cut out the midpipe and replace it would a normal muffler (ie Magnaflow 1in-1out 5"x7" or something similar) - it'll run you around 60-70 for the muffler and probably around 50 for the install (cut out old, weld in new)

New? How much was it? You should check the classifieds more often!

Sounds like a plan, but what will the results be? Do you know for sure that this will be any quieter?

you think?

I think the Crawford cats are contributing to the loudness more than the NISMO.

Hey El Diablo,

I've been contemplating getting the RT cats but I've been seeing posts with people having problems with the RT cats not lasting...
Any problems with yours? How long have you had them? I've got the NISMO catback exhaust and Borla headers now-- how much louder do the cats make an exhaust?

I know this wasn't directed @ me but I just had to let you know my experience. My RT cats just collapsed, they lasted a whole 6 days. Save your $$ and go with another company if you really want cats.

ZU L8R,
Thanks for the advice.
Don't think I'll go with RT based on the recent posts I've seen.
Six days is outrageous!! Hope you got your money back...

So how do you know when your CATs collapse? Does palladium come shooting out your exhaust!?

You should get your money back, *and* sell the metals for around $100 too. You credit card company should stand up for you.

I don't get it, I've never seen or heard an exhaust that is "loud" on a 350z. Compared to a mustang with headers, no cats, and flowmasters... any z would sound quite. The Nismo being a single pipe, I don't understand how it could be so loud. All of them are pretty tame from what I've heard. I agree with the other guys though, the stock cats will quite it back down. But then again, what's the point....???? Sounds to me like you should have left it alone and spent the money on other mods.

I have the RT's for over 3000 miles now and no problems.

I know a few guys with alot more than that on them and no problems. I know a few RT's had issues but this does not mean all will. If mine should fail because of a defect I'll buy another brand of cats. For now I am happy with the RT's

The combo of NISMO exahust and Rt's is a loud one.

You mean like high-flow cats, CAI, Z-tube and plenum? I did those too on the same day. I heard that the Nismo was one of the quietest, so I figured I would try it out too.
