Question Radar Detector: New Escort Solo S2

I am looking to get a radar detector - looking at the Passport 8500X50, V2 etc. I came across the new Escort Solo S2 Cordless. Claims to contain the same technology as 8500.

Anyone have any experiences or knowledge of any differences with 8500X50? Being cordless would be nice!

I`ve read in a few reports not to go cordless. Admittedly, it looks nicer, but supposedly, going cordless reduces range by roughly 20%.
I`ve have a Bel RX-65. You should check that one out too :-)

The Range on the Solo S2 is much better than MANY of the mid to upper range corded detectors.

I have a Solo S2 and I LOVE it. I got the cordless one so I could easily take it with me on my bike also. Range is NOT a problem.

Try this link for GREAT Radar Detector info and comparisons...

I just bought the Passport 8500 X50, but haven't had the chance to use it yet. I am just wondering for those that have an 8500, is there a cable that I can buy that will reach from the dash to the outlet between the seats? I am not sure about hard wiring it, and the cord that came with it definately will not reach.

Thanks

You can buy a cable from the Escort website, but why do that? Just buy the hardwire kit from the same site (about $10) and wire it into one of the fuses in the fusebox. It's not that difficult to do, and looks much better than having a cable strung out all over the place in the cabin. In fact, I think there's a thread on this site that discusses in detail, with pictures, how to hardwire your detector.

Incidentally, how do you like the X50? I'm considering buying one to replace my plain vanilla 8500, although my current unit works extremely well.

I had the Solo S2 ....I just returned it to get the Escort 8500 X50. I wasn't to happy with the display with the S2 and the new X50 has a "POP" mode to detect this new/old radar technology with the S2 doesnt. If you are spending that much money you might as well get one that does everything

I am just nervous about hard wiriing it...nervous about messing something up. I tested my radar against my dads v1, and they both picked up signals about the same time, but it seems like the v1 was picking up more false signals than the escort

There's not much you can do to mess things up in your car. In addition to the hardwire cable, the only other thing you need is a blade fuse tap to connect the (+) wire to one of the fuses. The ground wire attaches to any fixed bare metal in the car. That's it.

One of the easiest mods you can add to your car, and easily removable too.

Both use the same sort of connection. Take the car down to Circuit City and they can do the hardwire for you. It cost me $45.00 to do my roadster and because of a lack of headliner, it was a little more difficult to do than a coupe. You could probably get it done for like $30.00.
