update on A/C Problem
Took it to the dealer and the quick 30 minute diagnostic session turned into a 2 hour appointment. Bottom line is they still can't figure out how to fix the problem. All they know is that it is not a compressor failure or a freon leak. They say the compressor has no current flowing to it. They ran every diagnostic and still no solution. They have to call Nissan engineers to figure this one out. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Although they haven't fixed your problem yet, ruling out some things is still part of the solution. And, they have ruled out some big items - it's good that it's not the compressor or a refrig. leak. Hopefully, they will get it solved soon! Please let us know the ultimate solution.
Thanks, and hang in there!

Ask them if they checked the low pressure cutoff switch. This switch is supposed to shutoff the compressor in case of low freon pressure (don't want it compressing air). It may fail and indicate low pressure even though the system is full of freon.
I know this forum is an old one, BUT I had a recent experience you should know about. My A/C on my brand new 2004 350Z was intermittently blowing HOT air. In other words, compressor was shutting off. When compressor was staying on, A/C worked great, but WHY was it shutting off on it's own? After 4 visits to dealer service resulting in them having the car for a total of 18 days (yes, 18 days) with their best Z technician working on it, plus multiple calls to the Nissan hotline, plus bringing in a Nissan Engineering Field Technician..... they tried several things like replacing Integrated Power Distribution Module (IPDM), Engine Control Module (ECM), Body Control Module (BCM), and unified meter and A/C Amplifier. None of these solved the problem.
They knew something was causing the voltage to be cutoff to the compressor, but couldn't figure out what was causing this.
ANSWER: Finally, they did another pressure test and found the problem. PRESSURE SPIKED AS HIGH AS 400 PSI AND REGISTERED OVER 4 VOLTS AT TIME OF FAILURE. OPINION WAS CAR WAS DELIVERED FROM FACTORY WITH TOO MUCH FREON, WHICH CAUSED A/C CUTOFF AT HIGH VOLTAGE/PRESSURE . THEY EVACUATED A/C SYSTEM (IT HAD 1.65 LBS) AND PUT IN NEW FREON AT FACTORY SPECS (1.21 LBS). A/C FAILURE IS NO LONGER OCCURRING. SO, PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY A/C SYSTEM HAVING TOO MUCH FREON FROM FACTORY.

I'm sorry for bumping this up also. Since last Wednesday my car has been in for service because of the A/C blowing out hot air. They said it was the Engine Control Module that kept shutting off the compressor. They get the part in Tuesday, so i wont be getting my car till 3rd or 4th! If they dont fix it i might print out a copy of your situation bjgordon and fax it to them. Thanks for the info, and i'll keep you posted on my situation.
if anyone lives near the poconos and has a problem pm me. i am an hvac installer, all i need to do is throw on the guages and i can tell you pretty much what is happening with your system.
Im also having this a/c problem with my 04. 1st time I brought it in, It was in the 70's and the ac worked perfectly. It seems to happen only when its above 85 degrees. Finally I was able to bring it to them when it was blowing hot air. The service manage thinks it does not have enough freon. Well I will be bringing it in on Tuesday. I hope this time they actually test to see if it needs more freon.

Just got back from the dealer, They ordered a new compresser clutch. The service Manager said they had a few Z's with the same problem. I guess we will see when they install it.
On a side note. I told them that my front passenger rim was peeling. He said it was a factory defect and they also ordered me a new rim.
