dont forget Lotus...
Its the size of a match box, but I would love to see it up against the 911, or even the vette for that matter.
UH. Lotus is a car manufactuer, not a car! Doh! Perhaps you're talking about the elise? Even if you are, too bad they start at 40K. Try again.

Easy you sound like a real *****. Do you even own a Z?

And by the way I have seen EVO8s and STIs hold there own on the track against 911s....not to mention SMOKING them in the straights.

Just these past 2 days, I personally ran against a 911. (Check my mod list...) It did NOT walk away from me. I never said he didn't BEAT me, but he did NOT walk away.

Now, the Fully race prepped GT2. Wow, that's a totally different beast.

i was responding to this comment, btw:

"The fact that we can *even* compare a car costing more than twice (remember porsches cost way more with the custom options) really indicates the strength and VALUE of the Z."

and my point was the z, while great, is not the only car in its price range delivering this level of performance/$.

my point is that the Z is a well rounded sports car that looks really good too.

Thats why for me, the next logical step is the "real deal" - a 911. Sure you can compare the performance of a evo or a turbo civic to a 911 - but thats about it.

IMO you CAN compare the Z to a 911 b/c are both stylish purpose built sports cars for two (or 2.5) ppl.

Its obvious nissan was gunning for porsche. Look at the similarity btw the Z and the 911 lines. That said, the 997 looks really bullish and aggressive. Caint wait for my lease to come up!

911's are def quick but it all depends on if they can drive good just like the 350z drive...and when it comes to there car redlining like ours we can get our cars to redline to 7100 by getting the technosquare reflash....i think with good tires...and all good bolt on mods( intake...exhaust...pulley...headers) and also the reflash you could eat them all day long.

purpose built sports car vs. parts bin sports car.
handmade thoroughbred engine vs. multi-purpose engine.
price no object machine vs value-added machine.

It seemed like the posts above all concentrate mostly along dragging on which one's faster. well i've drive both (not the 05 911s) I can tell you that in terms of tactility of a car's communication, the Porsche has it in Aces while the Z when compared to it is nothing special. Much like most japanese sporty cars. But driven by itself it is a good value sports car. It's very special when you hop into one of those 911s especially the older 993s (air-cooled). Everything you see and touch in the car you know it's purposed built for a 911. Not some dash from a sedan or engine off a truck. It's unique.
But alas, cost is always a factor. So a Z is to me a poor mans' porsche and that's high praise for Nissan's achievement IMHO.

Guys
it is all irrelevant the Z is a great car not a porsche but by no means lacking in any way compared to a 911 non turbo. as for out running in a drag race i have been beaten and beaten many 911's so it is up to the drivers ability, on the track however i find that the 911 is much more capable car but a lot less forgiving, i race SCCA solo2 among others, and i am consistentaly faster and quicker than 90% of the 911's and all of the boxters (not saying much) i find the newer porsches 02 and up to be great cars but far from affordable. besides if we wanted to drive porsches we could. also a few inexpensive mods, and 911's are dots on the review mirror, anybody with a F/I car set up right will give all but the GT2 a run for its money and then the guy in the 170K$ GT2 will wonder why there are still headlights in his mirrors. so my point is enjoy the Z for what it is a world class sports car in any arena. also check out the SCCA pro race circut you might just get a big suprise to find the 350z's are doing quite well and OBTW beating many porsche and BMW teams with lots more time on the track.

Yes I own a poor mans porsche. I think it's badass. I had high expectations of the Z and I have not been let down at all. I have no complaints with the Z, well besides the fact that it's not a porsche.

Second of all, yes I am a *****... most especially when people get ignorant. Comparing a subbie or shitsubeshie to a porsche 911 = ignorant. Thinking straightline acceleration means everything as far as performance = even more ignorant.

I would love to see the looks on your faces when a 911 flys by you at 177mph. Maybe then you guys could respect the well known fact that the porsche 911 is a superior car to ANY 30k sports car on the road. If you want to argue this, you are outright stupid.

Thank you, and have a nice day.

I own a 2004 350Z.
My father owns a 2003 Carrera 911.

You cannot even compare the two. I drive it when i want and oh boy, what a HUGE difference.
Night and day.

This is the worst thread EVER.

This thread is very interesting. I dont think its fair for anyone to call the Z or a poor mans porshe. The fact of the matter is the Z is a great car. Its a 30k sports car that lives up to what a 30k sports car lives up to. It has the look for a car that would cost alot more than it does.
One factor to remember is price vs performance.
The porshe msrp was 70 grand. I will tell you that anyone that thinks they will buy a 30k car and beat or have a better car than a 70k car is just not thinking. There are reasons they cost what they do and its not just the name.
With that being said you can easily get a Z to perform to the level of a porshe if you want to dump the money into it.
I would dare say if you paid 35 for a Z and spent another 15k on it you would likely tear the 911 a new one. Then again if you were going to spend that much money ya might as well have just got the porshe. The bottom line is that stock z vs stock 911, The Z wont be able to handle it. Simple as that. I personally love the Z and love its look and thats enough for me.

This thread is pretty dumb. But most people really have no idea about engine size, 0-60 specs... etc. I have had people on numerous occasions ask me the price of my car and when they estimate the price come up with over 40k.

I don't even care about the price, the Z is a nice car. But if you really wanna do a comparision, look at a 96 Z compared to a 96 911. The 911 is a much nicer car with more prestige. In a few years our Z's styling will look outdated like every other car. The only people that will still truly enjoy its lines will be Z enthusiasts, but on the same note, the 911 styling is truly classic and I think everyone will always appreciate it.

The Z lacks the interior of the 911, the prestige and all that other junk.. but people still love it and tell me that they love the way it looks all the time. Bottom line, will I be keeping my Z for over 6 years? Probably not. Would I keep a classic 911 a lifetime? Probably yes. But I can't afford it right now, so I'm living with what I've got and loving it.

I don't want to get into the Porche bashing either, face it, it's a great car. A classic. However, you don't need to spend the 50K SvR350z says you have to spend to "tear the 911 a new one" as he said.

My car would probably do so and I spent about 5K in the mods needed to do it. A lot less than the 15k he mentions.

Porsche is a great car, but on the track it doesn't look good. That is a little bit of dissapointing.
I have seen lot's of video and lap time between 350z and other fast car (such as M3). Based on the number (best lap time), I think 350z is at fast as 911 or M3. (only not 0 - 60)

Lap time 2.5-mile "Big Track" at Willow

01:36.50 Corvette Z06
01:40.06 Nissan 350Z Track
01:40.09 BMW M3 SMG II
01:40.79 Porsche 911 Targa

Not to rain on your parade, but the Targa is 150lbs heavier than the normal Carrera, with most of this added weight coming in the roof of the car. The normal Carrera is also a few tenths faster to 60mph, so I would think that it would have a distinct advantage over the Targa when driven around a track.

Okay, I know Technosquare says this, but has anybody confirmed this from independent sources? "Discourage you from hitting the rev limiter?" Gimme a break...that's sounds like marketing if I've ever heard it.... It might be true that we run rich towards higher revs, but they wanna sell their ECU that increases the rev limit!!!
