350Z vs. 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera
I was just reading this Autoweek article:
http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content...._code=09135097
And it seems to me that the the Porsche engine is very comparable to our 350Z engine.
350Z vs. Porsche
HP: 287 @ 6200 rpm vs 320 @ 6800rpm
Torque: 274 @ 4800 rpm vs 273 @ 4250 rpm
Redline: 6600 rpm vs 7300 rpm
I think it's interesting that our max twist is 1 ft/lbs higher
Makes me think (wish) that if our engines were ECU tuned to reach 7300rpms, etc etc, we could come up with those numbers.
But the MSRP on a Porsche is $70,000 - I wonder if it would feel "much faster" than our Zs if I drove it (I KNOW IT IS FASTER). I sure would be upset if it didn't feel faster for double the price.
BTW... 100% respect to the Porsche - just observing and dreaming of cheap extra HP.

If you look at the way our dynos are behaving as we approach red-line, the HP and torque are dropping. Upping the red-line via an ECU mod probably wouldn't help much. Now if you want to rework the cams, valve train etc to make a higher reving motor, that would be interesting.
Also, I think our motors are pretty square in bore vs stroke. I think its a shorter stroke ratio that creates better high reving outputs. Of course I'm probably talking out my a$$ on this one, but basically what I am getting at is that our motors aren't built for high reving performance.
Oh yea, and the 911 would kill us.

I for real beat a 911 this weekend. Now it wasn't brand new. I believe.. IM NOT SURE that it was a late 90's model convertible. IT wasn't a boxter I know that for a fact. So the excact model I'm not 100% sure of, but it was a convertible. We took off coming out of the tollbooth and i beat him by 1/2 to 1 car length. And YES he was definatly racing me. It was alot of fun actually, he was definatly suprised by the Z.

the 350Z was never meant to take on the 911...the Z was built as a boxster beater...I haven't magazined raced them, but I think we do...my guess the next skyline will be the 911/vette beater, but will be closer to them in price as well...

...still won't make us beat a 911, though!

A follow up question: okay, the 911 will take the Z in power.
In what other way(s) is the 911 superior to the Z? Cornering?
drive comfort? interior appointments? Etc.
I'm looking for comments by those familiar with both cars; no interest in a "flame war" eithor direction.
When I look at the two cars & the price difference, why would anyone take the 911 over the Z (other than name recognition)?

the 911 is a dream to drive, there really isn't much comparison between the z and a 911 in my opinion. The 911 is out and out a better car. I haven't driven one, but from riding in one, and from what i've read and heard, it just feels great. I love the 350z and if I was going to spend 40 or less on a sports car, it would be my choice (unless i got a used vette, then it'd be tough) But its just not in the same category
